Really bad... really really bad. Seriously, never thought the first tornado would be a deadly one, in WT 1! That's pretty sad... hope the rest are okay.
SPC mesoanalysis really did not show amazing parameters with nearly no instability and relatively weak low level shear for winter.
Interestingly, a tornado hit a mobile home park and killed a person on that exact same date. Goes to show that January can still harbor some surprise tornadic events.

Yeah, the tornado that hit January 2, 1999 barely missed my house. Debris was all over our front yard. Neighbors fence was blown down, another neighbors roof torn off. The neighborhood about a mile up the highway from us was badly damaged. The weather is starting up again. The sky is lightning up like crazy. May be a long night.

The good news is that the back edge of the rain has already passed New Iberia. Threat is over for them.
Bad news is that any increase in low level shear could potentially bring on a potentially very dangerous situation across southern MS and AL. I think Mesoanalysis is underdone with CINH (convective inhibition), but LFC's (level of free convection) are pretty low. CAPEs are only around 500 j/kg but storms are already intensifying in southern Louisiana once again, probably due to the nocturnal increase in the strength of the low level jet.

Though, as i read, news are not that good. Agree
But: Tornadowatch at 1 am early january...Is that a "normal" developement ? It's counterintuitive, but if one were to compare summer and winter and which had more nocturnal tornado watches, winter would win. The low level jet is up to 50 kt now which will promote rapid destabilization and increased low level shear/helicity. So, it's not "normal" per say, but a dynamic storm system w/ instability - and tornado watches at 1 AM are possible.
Has any Fujita-rating been given ? No. They will probably survey tomorrow after daybreak.

Interesting. I keep on watching for a while. Counterintuitive means forced by jetstream and gulf-inflow ?
OK, i just got up and must remember President Bush in germany. He said " as you say Guten Morgen ! "
So i say Guten Morgen! everybody.
update: In last hours Hamburg had to welcome the first stormflood of the year with 5 ft. above normal-high-tide. Within a few days we face new records of 59 °F

NEW IBERIA, Louisiana (AP) -- Two people are dead after suspected tornadoes touched down during intense storms in southern Louisiana, authorities said Thursday.
The twisters, which were reported in eastern Iberia Parish just before 4 p.m., tore off roofs and ripped seven mobile homes from their foundations, Sheriff Sid Hebert said. The victims' names were not immediately released.
At least 15 people were taken to area hospitals.
The tornado reports came in as a severe band of storms hit the parish, leaving roads flooded. Gov. Kathleen Blanco declared a state of emergency in the parishes of Acadia, Allen, Sabine and Vermillion.
In New Orleans, crews were dispatched to clean drains and prepare for possible flooding ahead of a weather system that could drop several inches of rain on an area that has been drenched in the past two weeks.
A flash flood watch was in effect for portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi through Friday morning. The National Weather Service forecast 2 to 4 inches of rain, with locally heavy amounts possible, creating potential flooding.
While stormy weather this time of year isn't unusual, this latest system comes after two storms that helped bring December's rainfall total in New Orleans to more than 10 inches, nearly twice the normal average.
One of the storms, just before Christmas, caused widespread flooding in parts of the city and neighboring Jefferson Parish, and raised concerns about how well the area, hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, would fare in another hurricane.
