I just hit pay dirt in my quest to find imagery of historical tropical cyclones. This site will provide you with MPEG movies of all tropical cyclones since 1983:

Unfortunately, some of the Southern Hemisphere imagery is not of the greatest quality, but it's about the best I've been able to find for Southwest Indian Ocean storms. I believe this was already mentioned on another thread, but Digital Typhoon: http://agora.ex.nii.ac.jp/digital-typhoon/index.html.en has high-quality animations of typhoons and Australia-region cyclones since 1983.

Be advised that the Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclones do not follow the JTWC numbering system but start at 1 for the first storm in each year. Also, it seems that the images lose resolution when the storms pass over open water but become sharper when they near a major landmass, such as Australia or Madagascar.

Okay, someone please help out a computer illiterate individual....
I save the MPEG-2 files to my computer and try to open them w/ Windows Media Player. It sort of starts up, I can see the first frame of the video, but then it bombs and I get one of those "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." messages. It's like it can load the video, but not run it for some reason. Help?!

Cool site. Only problem is, I can run one video, but then when I try to see another storm, it won't run it. If I want to see another one, I have to get out of the site and come back later.
OK, at first I was confused because Windows Media Player wouldn't run any more videos, but all I had to do to get it to play was cancel out of the player and click on the link for the video again. See if this works for you.
