Doomsday Clock Will move Foward closer to midnight

:uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow:

We know what is going on around the world that will cause that they will move the doomsday clock foward.I hope that we never see that clock be at midnight.Below is all of what why the clock will move closer to midnight.I am praying that the second nuclear age does not come.

The major new step reflects growing concerns about a ‘Second Nuclear Age’ marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing ‘launch-ready’ status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks.

That clock is one of the single most useless things on this planet. Nobody should pay attention to it.

It did not move at all during the Cuban Missle Crisis, when we were very close to nuclear war.

It also did not move in 1995 when WE WERE A WHOLE 2 MINUTES AWAY FROM NUCLEAR WAR WITH RUSSIA. And no, that is not hyperbole. The Finns in their infinite wisdom sent a rocket to study the Northern Lights. They kind of forgot to tell Russia. Yeltsin did not know if that was us attacking as the radar signature was similar. Yeltsin was two minutes away from having to make a decision to launch a counter strike, but thankfully, the rocket turned away

That is the scenario that IMO is more likely, nuclear war by accident. Thinking you are being attacked, but it was really carelessness on a third party state's part

Pfft, like one can measure global threats with a clock...

It's a great way of scaring people though

what the heck is this malarkey. the world will end when the world will end. i don't need some 'experts' with a clock telling me when it will.

Derek I agree 100 percent. That clock means nothing whatsoever.

It would suck to be the guy who has to move the clock to doomsday. Like "Hmm... Tokyo is smoldering and Azerbaijan is glowing, missiles are heading randomly our way.. I should be either (a) with my loved ones or (b) engaging in hedonist pleasures or (c) affirming my belief in universal meaning, but instead I have to work. Dammit I should have known better when I signed up for this job."

I think some are sort of missing the point. It's not meant to be a science. It's just meant to reflect tensions and danger currently facing us, in the opinion of a few people. It doesn't respond to short events. There's no point in moving it for an event in which either doomsday or the end of the event is imminent.

And it's not really the clock's current time that is significant. It's when it moves that is significant. It's just a declaration that things are getting better or worse.

What will really be fun is if they ever set it to 11:59 and then decide that things are even worse.

If things get really bad and they do set it to 11:59, then what? 11:59:30? It's all about perception. No matter how "bad" anyone decides it is, it can always get worse. I think it should be more like 9:30 but that has no shock value and the "timekeepers" would find themselves mostly ignored. They keep it close to midnight so they give themselves a soapbox.

LONDON, England (AP) -- The world has nudged closer to a nuclear apocalypse and environmental disaster, a trans-Atlantic group of prominent scientists warned Wednesday, pushing the hand of its symbolic Doomsday Clock two minutes closer to midnight.

It was the fourth time since the end of the Cold War that the clock has ticked forward, this time from 11:53 to 11:55, amid fears over what the scientists are describing as "a second nuclear age" prompted largely by atomic standoffs with Iran and North Korea.

I agree with you. I also think that with current events moving it closer to midnight makes sense. Hopefully it won't ever reach midnight, but it really depends on us (our species) whether or not that happens.

I decided to google this for myself

It was the Norwegians, not the Finns. And it was a joint venture w/ the U.S. They did send a notice to Russia but for some reason it never got to the radar technicians on duty at the time.

And the last link shows that we've been on the edge of nuclear war many, many times, so yeah, I agree the clock is useless. Just like the terror alert levels, IMO.

Sorry folks, I disagree.

The "doomsday clock" serves as a significant reminder. If you will, stop and read the entire text posted by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

Worldwide there are huge amounts of enriched plutonium either unguarded or lost. 26K plus nuclear warheads on launch ready status. Unstable nations seeking to acquire weapons grade plutonium.

I grew up the son of a career USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) ranking NCO. I can tell you that SAC is a very serious group.

I am of the opinion that 5 minutes till midnight is a very conservative estimate.

As you read my post.....remember this.....Israel has American made F-16 fighters equipped with tactical nuclear warheads......and they have already suggested pre-emptive strikes into Irans developing nuclear technology.

We are tap dancing on thin ice.
