'Rodeo Princess' Janna Cloyd of Show Low feels the chill after her plunge in 2005.
The Navajo County Sheriff's Office is organizing the Fourth Annual Polar Bear Plunge. Those who want be a part of the event and dive into a freezing lake will help benefit the Special Olympics.
Those with thick skin, a penchant for adventure or even both can show up Saturday, Feb. 17 at Show Low Lake. The plunge will take place at 11 a.m., which will warm the lake a little, but not much.
Everyone is welcomed to participate or to try and urge family, friends or co-workers to take the plunge. A minimum $10 contribution is requested, but participants are welcome to give more.
No one is off-limits from diving. A boss, a cop or even an elected official are all encouraged to join in the fun. For an especially unwilling participant, people can put a "bounty" on that person and then raise the money needed to get them to take the plunge.
All proceeds go to benefit Special Olympics Arizona. Participants raising $50 will get a Polar Bear Plunge T-shirt, while participants raising $100 get a sweatshirt. Awards will also be given out for best costume, largest cheering section, most money raised by both individuals and businesses, longest distance traveled and oldest participant.
Please make checks payable to Special Olympics Arizona. For more information about the event or to register, contact Cmdr. Cheryl Powell, Sgt. Tony Miller or Dep. Nancy Huser at the Navajo County Sheriff's Office at (928) 524-4781 or (928) 532-6860.
