Dog Buried Alive

By Adam Walser

PENSACOLA - A dog is rescued after he was discovered buried alive behind an Escambia County home Sunday.

The Bull Mastiff-mix had no more bark left Monday as he laid in a kennel at the Escambia County Animal Shelter.
On Sunday, witnesses say he used every ounce of strength to howl for help for several hours while the earth constricted around him.

The sandy soil scraped his skin off like sandpaper with each howl. His eyes were blinded by dirt and only his nose and mouth poked through.

"This, in my mind, is on its face, a felony animal cruelty case," said Escambia County Animal Control Director Bruce Rova.

Becky Cissna and her neighbors say the nightmare began Saturday in the backyard of a neighbor's home on West Jackson Street.

"He was just yelping. There's a new puppy back here, keeps yelping to get in. So they thought that's what it was," said Cissna.

After hearing the howling for more than 12 hours, a neighbor finally figured out that it was coming from the other side of a fence. So he climbed on top of a wood pile and peered over. There he saw a hole with the dog's muzzle poking through

"They dug a deep hole and somehow put the dog in it. Whether the dog was unconscious when they put it in, who knows?" said Cissna.

The hole was more than three feet deep.

The dog was surrounded by three other dogs.

"He saw his nose sticking out of the ground yelping," said Cissna.

"Our emergency duty officer cried through the digging. It was quite an emotional situation for her," said Rova.

"She just freaked out. She was digging and digging with her hands, but the people that were there were just standing there and they were like 'It's not my dog,'" said Cissna.

Meanwhile, neighbors jumped the fence and used shovels to helped free the dog. It wasn't the first time many had encountered him. "They walk it up and down the street all the time," said Rachael Cissna.

Fox Ten News tried to talk to the residents, but nobody came to the door.

The case is now under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

"To me, it's unimaginable that somebody could be so cruel, that they would do something like this," said Rova.

So far, no one has been charged in the case, but inverstigation is continuing.

The dog is already showing signs of improvement.

If you have seen the movie "Turner and Hooch" then you have seen a Bull Mastiff (sort of).

This crime is very evil and extremely shocking. I'm so relieved to know someone rescued this poor dog but can you imagine how affected he will be now, from this heinous act?

You're so right Linda - this has got to stop.

The thing is they're not gonna stop. Some think it's just downright funny. How would they like it if they were buried, abused, screwed, blued, and tattoed...wait, they're using that as an excuse for their heinous crimes.

I take it the three other dogs were dead. How could anyone be so cruel. If they didn't want the dogs, take them to a shelter. I just don't understand people.

Those low lifes need to be buried alive as well. I just don't understand why some feel the need to do this or find it "acceptable" or "fun". It makes me sick!! :grr:

Linda,

This was all over the news here (Escambia County) and it made me just as sick as all of you. There is also another "animal crime" going on here where a neighborhood has someone who is going around shooting all the pets with a pellet gun. I am just so sickewned by this! My sis works in a local vets office here as a tech and I get to hear all the cruelties that happen ........... it is just so sad!!

What a sweet, sweet face. How anyone could do such a thing to an innocent animal is beyond me. Thank god the neighbors were paying attention. I would rather see some humans get buried alive than any innocent animal. :grr:

We should bury who ever did this in a hole and see how they like it!! This is just sad. I am a huge dog lover and this just angers me to no end.

Still no arrests have been made in what one animal control officer called the worse case of animal cruelty he’d ever seen. The Bull Mastiff mix was buried alive over the weekend and rescued Sunday. He continues to improve at a Pensacola veterinarian clinic and has even picked up a nickname, “Lazarus”.

Officials say the dog stood on his own several times Wednesday and took three very shaky steps but continues to show slow but good progress.

The dog was buried alive in a hole that was three feet deep with only his nose showing. Neighbors heard his cries for help, called animal control officers and helped free the dog. Escambia County Sheriff’s office is continuing their investigation and says an arrest may not come this week.

The bull mastiff mix, rescued over the weekend after being buried alive continues to make improvement at a Pensacola Vet Clinic. Director of the Escambia County Animal Shelter, Bruce Rova says he was much better today and was able to move on his own for the first time since being dug up Sunday from a three and a half foot deep hole in the backyard of a home on West Jackson Street.

The shelter has been flooded with calls and e-mails wanting to adopt the dog or at least do something to help in its recovery. Calls have come from as far away as Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida. Rova says once legal issues are settled and the dog is well enough he will be put up for adoption. A dozen people have already signed up to take him home.

Those people need to be shot, several times. I can not imagine anything worse than hurting a helpless animal. All I would like is 5 minutes with those people.
:grrr: :grrr:

I just don't know how people can do this evil acts towards animals? I know if anyone ever hurt my dog or cats, I would probably end up in jail.

Any updates on the pup?
