...snow showers and possibly snow squalls today and this evening
followed by the coldest air mass of the season tonight into friday
night...
an unseasonably cold and unstable arctic air mass is forecast to
move into the region today and this evening. as it does so it will
trigger scattered to numerous snow showers, possibly a few snow
squalls, and perhaps even some thunder. the snow showers by
themselves could produce accumulations of up to an inch. if
localized snow squalls were to occur, winds would increase and
visibilities would be reduced to a quarter mile or less in snow and
blowing snow, a quick one to two inches of snow would accumulate,
possibly even some higher amounts. driving conditions would become
locally dangerous.
the most likely area to see snow squalls is in the poconos and the
northern third of new jersey north of interstate 78.
the heaviest snow showers are expected to occur into the early
afternoon in pennsylvania, during the afternoon across northern
delaware and maryland as well as most of new jersey and in the
evening across extreme southern new jersey as well as across
delaware and the maryland eastern shore.
persons traveling through this evening are advised to be prepared
for rapidly changing and variable weather and road conditions.
please factor in extra time to reach your destination and leave
plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicles around you in
the event you drive into falling and or blowing snow.
arctic air will be streaming into the region today, and this process
will intensify as winds increase tonight. low temperatures by friday
morning will be in the single digits and teens nearly everywhere.
wind chill values will drop to below zero across northern parts of
pennsylvania and new jersey and to around zero elsewhere. a wind
chill advisory is in effect for the poconos and sussex county new
jersey.
municipalities which have a high number of homeless people are
advised to make the necessary preparations to help these
individuals. anyone that has to work or spend time outdoors thursday
night or friday should find their warmest outfits, since this may
very well match the coldest day of last winter. wear multiple layers
of clothing and do not forget hats, scarves and gloves. winds on
friday are expected to gust as strong as 35 to 40 mph.
finally, people with outdoor pets should see to it that they have,
at a minimum, a sturdy and well insulated shelter from the wind and
cold and access to unfrozen water. the most humane thing to do is to
bring them indoors.
winds will diminish friday night, although temperatures might be
slightly colder. a moderating trend is expected for the weekend, but
the overall cold weather pattern is not leaving us anytime soon.
please listen for further updates as the day progresses.

...SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS TONIGHT WITH A BLAST OF ARCTIC AIR AND
VERY COLD WIND CHILLS THROUGH FRIDAY...
AN ARCTIC FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO SWEEP ACROSS THE AREA THIS EVENING.
AS THE ARCTIC AIR DEEPENS OVER OUR AREA, SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS AND
POSSIBLY A FEW ISOLATED SNOW SQUALLS WILL OCCUR TONIGHT. WITHIN ANY
HEAVIER SNOW SHOWER, LOCAL VISIBILITIES CAN QUICKLY BECOME REDUCED
TO LESS THAN A MILE. GENERALLY, LOCALLY A COATING OF SNOW IS
EXPECTED WITH THE MORE PRONOUNCED SNOW SHOWERS, HOWEVER A BRIEF
SQUALL COULD LOCALLY PRODUCE UP TO AN INCH OF SNOW.
IF DRIVING TONIGHT, BE PREPARED FOR THE POTENTIAL FOR RAPIDLY
CHANGING WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS. WITH COLDER TEMPERATURES
SETTLING INTO THE REGION TONIGHT, ONLY A LIGHT DUSTING OR COATING OF
SNOW CAN PRODUCE SLIPPERY ROADS. USE EXTRA CAUTION ESPECIALLY ON
BRIDGES, OVERPASSES AND OTHER ELEVATED ROADWAYS AS THEY TEND TO
BECOME SLIPPERY FIRST.
ACCOMPANYING THE ARCTIC AIR WILL BE AN INCREASE IN THE WINDS TONIGHT
AND ESPECIALLY ON FRIDAY. NORTHWEST WINDS TONIGHT WILL GUST AS HIGH
AS 25 TO 30 MPH, AND WHEN COMBINED TO THE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES,
WIND CHILL VALUES WILL DROP BELOW ZERO ACROSS THE LEHIGH VALLEY,
BERKS COUNTY AND PARTS OF NORTHERN NEW JERSEY, WITH WIND CHILLS
NEARING ZERO ELSEWHERE. ON FRIDAY, NORTHWEST WINDS GUSTING AS HIGH
AS 40 MPH WILL COMBINE WITH DAYTIME TEMPERATURES ONLY IN THE TEENS
AND 20S TO PRODUCE WIND CHILL VALUES OF ONLY AROUND 10 DEGREES.
ANYONE WHO HAS TO WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTDOORS TONIGHT AND FRIDAY
SHOULD TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS AGAINST THIS BITTERLY COLD WEATHER.
WEAR MULTIPLE LAYERS OF CLOTHING, HATS, SCARVES AND GLOVES.
THE GUSTY WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO CAUSE ANY WIDESPREAD DAMAGE.
HOWEVER, THE WINDS MAY BRING DOWN A FEW WEAK TREES AND TREE LIMBS,
SO ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES MAY RESULT ESPECIALLY ON FRIDAY. ALSO, THE
WINDS MAY MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT AT TIMES ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH
PROFILE VEHICLES AND ACROSS AREA BRIDGES AND OTHER ELEVATED ROADWAYS.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR OUTDOOR PETS AND LIVESTOCK, AND BE
SURE THAT THEY HAVE, AT A MINIMUM, A STURDY AND WELL-INSULATED
SHELTER FROM THE WIND AND COLD AS WELL AS ACCESS TO UNFROZEN WATER.
IF POSSIBLE, IT IS BEST TO BRING THEM INDOORS.
WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO DIMINISH FRIDAY NIGHT, ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES
WILL REMAIN VERY COLD. A MODERATING TREND IS EXPECTED FOR THE
WEEKEND, BUT THE OVERALL COLD WEATHER PATTERN WILL CONTINUE IN THE
NEAR TERM.

I was offline last night but I wanted to note that we had a HECK of a snow squall that came through starting pretty much when I made my last post here. I didn't realize that we had about an inch of snow on the ground and blizzard like conditions until about 10:00 pm when I put on TWC and they stated that Philadelphia was having snow and wind at that time. I was like "HUH?". I opened the door and I couldn't believe it!!!

As far as February 12 is concerned, for the last couple of years, the President's Day weekends for the most part have been marred by a winter storm of some kind. That weekend is one of the busiest for the casino industry. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we got something again around then.

...A GOOD CHANCE THAT SNOW SHOWERS WHICH MAY OCCASIONALLY BE HEAVY
WILL USHER IN A REINFORCEMENT OF ARCTIC AIR...
ANOTHER SHOT OF UNSEASONABLY COLD ARCTIC AIR IS FORECAST TO MOVE
INTO EAST CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA AND NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW JERSEY
TONIGHT INTO MONDAY. THERE IS A CHANCE THAT SNOW SHOWERS WILL
DEVELOP IN THE COLD AND UNSTABLE AIR TONIGHT, AND SOME OF THE SNOW
SHOWERS COULD BE HEAVY AT TIMES. IF SNOW SHOWERS DO DEVELOP, THEY
COULD GENERATE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF UP TO TWO INCHES, AND IF HEAVY
SNOW SHOWERS DEVELOP, THEY COULD GENERATE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE. THERE
IS NOT HIGH CONFIDENCE IN HOW THE APPROACHING EVENT WILL UNFOLD, BUT
AT PRESENT THE BEST CHANCES FOR SNOW SHOWERS SEEM TO BE ACROSS FAR
SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY, NORTHEAST MARYLAND
AND NORTHERN AND CENTRAL DELAWARE.
PEOPLE SHOULD STAY ABREAST OF THE LATEST FORECASTS IF THEY ARE
CONSIDERING ANY TRAVEL ON SUNDAY NIGHT. IF HEAVY SNOW SHOWERS DO
DEVELOP, THEN DRIVING WILL BECOME QUITE HAZARDOUS AS ROADS LOCALLY
WOULD BECOME SNOW COVERED AND VISIBILITIES WOULD DROP IN FALLING AND
BLOWING SNOW.
THE TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST TO DROP INTO THE LOWER TO MID 20S BY
MONDAY MORNING WITH WIND CHILL VALUES DROPPING TO AROUND 10 ABOVE ON
NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15 TO 30 MPH. THOSE WINDS ARE FORECAST TO
INCREASE TO 20 TO 35 MPH ON MONDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL ONLY CLIMB TO
AROUND 30 WITH WIND CHILLS ONLY REACHING AROUND 20.
MUNICIPALITIES THAT HAVE A HIGH NUMBER OF HOMELESS PEOPLE MAY WISH
TO MAKE THE NECESSARY PREPARATIONS TO HELP THESE INDIVIDUALS. ANYONE
OUTDOORS LATE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY SHOULD WEAR MULTIPLE LAYERS
OF CLOTHING, A HAT, A SCARF AND GLOVES.
PEOPLE WITH OUTDOOR PETS SHOULD SEE TO IT THAT THEY HAVE, AT A
MINIMUM, A STURDY AND WELL INSULATED SHELTER FROM THE WIND AND COLD
AND ACCESS TO UNFROZEN WATER. THE MOST HUMANE THING TO DO IS TO
BRING THEM INDOORS.
