It really is quite a stunning tornado for Florida. How sad about the many deaths. However, looking at the large area of devastation, the fact that it came during the night, and that we don't have warning sirens in FL, I'd think it would be much higher.

Not for severe weather, no. Showers yes, stray t-storm maybe.

By the way the NWS in RUSKIN did a survey of the SUmter county only at determined low end F3 with 140-150 mph wind. I can tell you working early this morning utilizing MLB radar and looking at some of that daamage, that Lake county may be 20to 30 or so knots higher than that.

So this could be the strongest tornado in Florida history?

P.S. I love bay news 9. Keep up the good work!

A low-end F3 can certainly cause a great amount of damage. I think getting a "birds-eye" view of the damage path would help....maybe we could get some information about possible vortices within the tornado that would have greatly enhanced the damage in isolated locations.

Any damage or injuries or deaths around Tavares, FL?? My mom has a cousin who lives down there. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Nice preliminary report put out by the Melbourne NWS...

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/surveys/020207/index.html

According to this there have been 19 deaths thus far. Still no word on the intensity though, however they said they will be sending out surveyers tomorrow.

Upper cat3 sounds like. But that is a very strong tornadoe for Florida. I think the last f5 was 99.

There has never been an F5 in Florida IIRC.

The strongest in the 1998 outbreak was an F3.
