On This Date in 1978

February 6th, 1978 -

the "Great Blizzard of '78" struck New England. By the time the storm ended late on the 7th, Boston had 27.1 inches of new snow to set an all-time single storm snowfall record. Up to 50 inches fell in northern Rhode Island. A tremendous east-northeasterly gradient was set up as the low (984 millibars) bucked up against an enormous 1052 millibar high to the north. Winds gusted to 92 mph at Chatham, Massachusetts. East facing coastal sections were devastated by 4 successive high tides. The 14 foot tide recorded at Portland, Maine was perhaps the highest this century. 75 people were killed and total damage was 500 million dollars.

Hey!!! I remember that... well kinda... I was 2... I relive it through tons of pics my parents had!! I lived in Woonsocket, Rhode Island when it happened... We got 54 inches of snow!!! I was there!!!!

I remember it too. 78 was a great year for snow, I remember it well. I was living in CT at the time and I was a little more than two (more like 15). I remember jumping off of the school roof into the snow drifts. I remember the collapse of the roof of the Hartford Civic Center. I remember being out of school until they shoveled all the snow off of the flat roofs because of the fear of collapse. So we went up on the roofs and jumped off instead! My brother was hired to help shovel. I always thought it kind of funny that they thought it was too dangerous to be in the building, but it was OK for them to be on top shoveling.

I would love for my kids to see a snow year like that!
