New York City Coffee

#1 Postby jasons2k » Thu Feb 08, 2007 1:15 pm

OK, I have a question for our yankee friends up in Gotham.

Last February, I had the priviledge to visit NYC for the first time (it was during the blizzard of '06). While there, I noticed that the coffee up there had a distinct flavor to it. It's different than any of the coffee we get here in the south, different than Folger's or Starbucks or Seattle's Best (or Seattle's WORST depending on your POV) - really any of the standard brands of coffee I have tasted.

This coffee wasn't unique to one place either. At our hotel in Jersey City, our hotel in Manhattan, the restaurant we had breakfast at (the Stagecoach Diner? 8th Ave & 33rd near Penn Station) - every place up there, the coffee tasted the same. It definitely had a stronger and distinct taste to it.

SO - my question - what is it? What kind of coffee (or "Joe") is it up there? Is there a specific brand that has this distinct taste? Is it the way it is brewed? I have brewed my Folger's stronger and still cannot duplicate the flavor.

HELP!! I want a good NYC style cup of Joe here in Texas - thanks!!

It's not New York but Community Club coffee or Mello Joy coffee are the best coffees in southern louisiana where coffee drinkers like their coffee strong. My husband drinks the CC dark roast. You'll find most of the people around here drink either one of these.

Yeah CC is pretty big here in Houston too. Mellojoy is a new one foe me though - thanks for the links.

I have never heard of Mellojoy.... I used to drink Autocrat brand when I lived in RI... They even have "coffee Syrup".... You use it like chocolate syrup and add it to your milk... I remember when I was in elementary school, you could get chocoloate milk, plain milk, or coffee milk... Its big in Rhode Island...

Maybe this is why NY coffee tastes different:

I know at the casino I work for and from what I can see at other restaurants, they usually use Ireland Coffee which is now owned by Sara Lee, if I'm not mistaken.

lolz....

Perhaps I should have been more specific. The French Market coffee and chicory is pretty strong stuff. One might say its an acquired taste.
