Has anyone heard of a Frostquake??

#1 Postby ohiostorm » Mon Feb 19, 2007 10:49 pm

People around here have been hearing loud banging noises near their homes and have been calling in to police and other officials. They came up with the conclusion of it being Frostquakes. Here is the news story...

Fascinating......

I've heard of frostquakes, but I've never experienced one. I've not been in a climate cold enough for them for any extended period of time.

That is very interesting! The other night I kept hearing banging and popping noises, so much so that our dog thought there was someone at the front door. Freaky! Wonder if they could felt/heard this far south? We've had many morning readings near 0, in the past few weeks.

Thanks for the link.

Ice cracking in Ohio seems like the most likely explanation with all this cold weather. Of course if this were Florida or Virginia you might look further for an explanation of above the frost line noises.
