Strange Temperature Increase

#1 Postby conestogo_flood » Wed Feb 21, 2007 10:32 pm

Just to not, how many people had a big temperature rise the other day? I just noticed this on the cities weather station site. It shocked me to say the least.

For Waterloo, Ontario
Temperature at 6 am
Feb 19: -26.2 °C / -15.15F
Temperature at 6 am
Feb 20: 2.1 °C / 35.78F

Anyone else have that?

I've never had a RISE like that (that I remember)

I've seen it fall at that rate though personally. (65 to 20 in less then 24 hours about a month ago)

Make things more eerie, it's a complete whiteout right now outside. We weren't supposed to have any snow. It's also 0C.

What did the winds do? Usually such rises like that are due to a warm frontal passage or a shift to a southerly flow on the back side of a high strong enough to surface. Also, clouds and precip can cause a sharp rise.

Here on the east slope of the Rockies Chinook winds can cause 30 C tempature rises in a few hours, and we can also get a similar drop. I have seen the temp rise and fall all day as the warm air advances and retreats.

it was a warm front that came through Southern Ontario on Monday night that caused the temperatures to rise that evening into the morning. Prior to the arrival of the front, Waterloo ON and surrounding districts were under the influence of COLD arctic air which took hold on Sunday, though such astonishing rises for us here are rare.

Walking out the door on Monday morning felt a whole lot different walking out the same door on Tuesday morning. Though it was a *nicer door to walk out of* on Tuesday.

Rises(or drops) like that are very common around here. This is especially true on some of our coldest days in winter and any sunny day in Spring through Fall.

On Feb 1 1985, for example, the low in Maybell was -61, but it got up to 6. The next night was -52, but it got up to 15. Both days in a row has spreads of 67 degrees.

On the day you posted this (Feb 21 2007), for example, we had a high of 46, but a low of -8, a 54 degree spread.

50 degree temperature spreads are fairly common in winter, but the 60 and 70 degree spreads in a day are more common May through October.

In summer, when it's in the 90's it's usually in the 30's and 40's at night. In July 2005 and at the official weather station, there were 9 days that month recording 30's in the morning and 90's that same the day and at the exact same location. Some days in October we have lows in the teens and highs around 80.

I think the record diurnal swing in a non frontal situation is 72F in NV from a morning low of 20F to an afternoon high of 92F. Happened in September when the air is very dry but the Sun angle is still high enough for good daytime heating. The other day we had a low of 27 and a high of 68 for a 41 degree swing which is unusual for us in February-usually see that in May and early June when we are bone dry.

More interesting historic diurnal swings in Nevada:

October 20, 1999

-2 to 70 in seven hours at Charleston

October 7, 1997

16 to 86 at San Jacinto Ranch

September 21, 1954

12 to 87 at Deeth

I believe it was the US record and was broken by a small Colorado town in October 1991 when the temp went from 4 in the morning to 80 in the afternoon.

-21F outside right now. I hope we have an unusual increase. It's only supposed to get up to 22F. Come on unusual increase. :D Nice if it broke freezing today or something, but alas....

-8 this morning and 40 officially right now seven hours later. Nothing unusual, but I do like it when it gets warm in the day after a cold morning. Makes the ride home on a bike much nicer. :D
