My dog attacked me today
I feel so bad and at the same time relieved. Sam, our dauchsaund, who is 11 years old and has had surgery for two ruptured disc, so don't think we don't love him we paid 1,000.00 for his back surgery attacked me today and bit my right hand pretty bad and my stomach and my left ankle. I went to the doctor, had X-rays and cleaned and bandaged up and got antibiotics and pain pills so I will be OK. I had a tetanus shot after Katrina when I stepped on a dumb nail while looking for some part of my house.
Sam has had all his shots, actually just got his check-up 2 weeks ago with his Rabies shot but they still have to keep him quaranteened for 10 days to make sure he doesn't have something. He was doing good, no heart worms (which is great for the south) and no other problems except his constant ear infection that we have been giving him antibiotics for and he has been on Prednisone for 4 weeks.
I am so sad that we have to put him to sleep but this was an unprevoked attack, I was picking him up to put him in my bedroom because the Pest Control Man was coming at 1:30 and when I looked at the clock it was 1:33.....Sam likes to jump on everybody so we always put him "up" when a stranger comes in the house. He has snapped at members of the family before and even bitten my son, but never just plainly attacked someone like he did me.
Just say a prayer for me and my family as it is sad for us to have to put down a family pet we have had for 11 years since he was a puppy. My heart hurts for my son, he loved Sam so much. He even came home for a couple of hours tonight from college to make sure I was OK and because he was sad about Sam but understood it had to be done.
Not a good day to stop taking my Paxil, right.........
Thanks for letting me be sad and telling somebody else....ya'll are the best friends you could ever want and I've only met a few in person but feel as though we are all one big family.

Mary, I'm so sorry. Having to put down a pet that you've raised and loved is so hard. ((HUGS)) to you and your family. So sad.
My little Ernie can be a little snippy sometimes and it scares me when he's around my grandchildren. I really have to keep an eye on him. He will lick them to death but don't try to take anything away from him - like balls or bones. He'll bite!!!!!

Thanks to all of you for your kind words and prayers. It really has me sad and poor little Peach is walking around looking for him and crying. They played really good together until he got tired of her and he would snap seriously at her and jump up on the loveseat or wherever that she can't get on yet, although it won't be long. She is growing like a weed! My eyes are still really swollen from crying so much, wish they would go down.

I am so deeply sorry for your family!! It has been a long time since I've posted on the boards, but my heart went out to you immediately, having "been there, done that". Please know you did the right thing for your family's safety, and the fact that something was making your 4-legged family member so unhappy that he did that. You'll see him again in heaven... Prayers and healing to you!!

Mary,
You have my deepest sympathies on this matter. Putting a pet down is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life but rest assured it's the right thing to do for your safety and the familys safety. I'm sure your pup became aggressive like this due to it's injury and once a dog learns a behavior it's almost impossible to break! God Bless.
