...a winter storm threat increasing for sunday afternoon into monday
morning...

low pressure will organize across the central part of the country
tonight into saturday. as this storm moves toward the great lakes
and ohio valley later tonight and saturday, it will intensify for a
time. meanwhile, high pressure will be centered to our north,
allowing colder air to remain across our region. as low pressure
approaches on sunday, moisture is expected to overspread the region
from southwest to northeast starting around midday sunday.
another low pressure system is forecast to develop near the mid
atlantic coast late sunday, keeping moisture across our region
sunday night into monday.

the exact track of the coastal storm will impact how much moisture
actually falls across our area, and also the extent of warming
temperatures. while there is still some uncertainty involved, it
strongly appears that a good portion of our region will see another
round of accumulating snow and sleet. with milder air pushing in
above the surface late sunday, freezing rain will be possible across
southeastern pennsylvania, portions of northeastern maryland and
central and southern new jersey. if enough warmer air works inland,
the mixed precipitation will then turn to plain rain for some areas.
at this time, areas with the highest potential for accumulating snow
and sleet are along and to the north and west of the interstate 95
corridor.

because the exact location of where the coastal storm forms is still
a bit uncertain, it is still too early to pinpoint accumulations.
however, a plowable snow and sleet event appears to be increasing
for areas north and west of the interstate 95 corridor, with a
light coating of ice possible as well. as a result of this, travel
could become hazardous during the second half of the weekend and
into monday morning.

stay tuned to noaa weather radio all hazards and your local media
outlets for the latest updates on this developing winter storm. a
winter storm watch may be issued for parts of the area during the
next 24 hours.

LOW PRESSURE OVER KANSAS TODAY WILL MOVE SLOWLY TO THE SOUTHERN
GREAT LAKES THROUGH MONDAY. A WARM FRONT WILL EXTEND EASTWARD FROM
THIS LOW TO THE CAROLINA COAST SUNDAY, AND ANOTHER CENTER OF LOW
PRESSURE WILL FORM ON THIS FRONT AND MOVE NORTHEASTWARD OVER THE MID
ATLANTIC COASTAL WATERS LATER SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY. PRECIPITATION
WILL OCCUR OVER OUR REGION AS A RESULT.

INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN AS RAIN...SNOW

STORM WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
11 AM EST MONDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE UPPER 30S WHEN THE SNOW
BEGINS THIS AFTERNOON, THE TEMPERATURES SHOULD DROP RAPIDLY TO
FREEZING WITH THE ONSET OF THE SNOW. THE SNOW COULD COME DOWN
HEAVILY FOR A PERIOD OF TIME THIS EVENING WHEN MOST OF THE
ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL FALL. SNOW SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN ARE THEN
EXPECTED OVERNIGHT WITH SOME MORE SNOW MONDAY MORNING.

TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD RANGE FROM 1 TO 3 INCHES. HOWEVER,
FREEZING RAIN IS ALSO FORECAST AND A 1/4 INCH GLAZE OF ICE CAN

It came down pretty hard for a while. We were in Drexel Hill, PA for a party at the time it started and it was coming down pretty heavily when we left at about 3:30. I'd say we had at my house about 2 inches of snow before the sleet started. Fortunately, the roads were in great shape this morning, just some slush and it was above freezing.

...heavy rain possible thursday night with some wintry precipitation
possible in northeast pennsylvania and northern new jersey...

intense low pressure is forecast to move to the great lakes
through thursday night. a complex frontal system trailing from
the low will move across the ohio valley and over the middle
atlantic states thursday night. the frontal system will then move
off the coast friday morning.

as the system heads to the east, it will acquire moisture from the
gulf of mexico. since warmer air will also move in from the south
once precipitation begins, rain is expected to fall in most areas
and isolated thunderstorms are also possible.

over northeast pennsylvania and northern new jersey, there could
be some freezing rain and sleet and possibly some snow, depending
on how long the colder air remains in place.
