Max Mayfield in hot water

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Tue Feb 27, 2007 10:23 am

In todays St. Petersburg Times, (Local and State) it is said that Max caught a "200-lb Goliath Grouper the day after his retirement in January." In florida it is illegal to bring a goliath grouper f any size into your boat for any amount of time. Mayfield says he didnt know the rules and is under investigation by the fisheries service gereal counsel.

Give me a break!!!! Have they go nothing better to do? I understand that there are laws and that there are reasons for those laws, but first of all why is this even being publicized?? Ridiculous!!!

Hot Water

#3 Postby hurricanetrack » Tue Feb 27, 2007 1:59 pm

He was fishing in hot water! That was for sure. Remember when water temps down there were so warm that NWS MIA put out a statement to that fact?

Oh well, this too shall pass.

A goliath Grouper is a very large fish that is an endanger species. Yes it is illegal to bring one into your boat and remove the hook.

Whether it's dumb or not, the law offers no lenience for ignorance of the law.

The law itself isn't dumb. It in fact appears to be necessary to protect this species. The fact that this has even been publicized is what I find offensive. How many other times has this same thing happened with someone else, but never been publicized? Of course, we will never know.

I think the answer is simple. There probably isn't anything new and interesting to report right now. Max is somewhat of a celebrity, so the cameras will always be on him vs. some local average joe from the neighborhood. It causes juicy gossip and drama which I think it has done a good job in this thread so far.

As a matter of interest, what the hell are you supposed to do if you accidently get one on a hook? are you just supposed to cut the line?
