This really is a silly story. It's embarassing to the newspaper.

If abuse of power had played a part, there'd be a genuine story. But no such thing happened and there's no story here.

so many more serious , even heinous crimes out there, and they wanna tarnish Mr. Mayfield's reputation for something as inane as this is just not right. OK, so it was illegal to do this, but it's not as if he deliberatly did it, which would be hard to prove anyway.

And how did the authorities even find out he did this? Do they go around following his every move?

That is a dumb story - reporters with nothing better to do (than to make a big to-do of an honest mistake - ditto for the state official)...

What is ironic is that NOAA is not only the agency that contains the NWS and NHC, it also oversees the National Marine Fisheries Service which is to protect fish habitat. I am sure that Max will fare OK.

Nope. Doesn't count. Max has already retired, so he is no longer obligated to the National Marine Fisheries Service. Why do you think he retired? Duh!

I think this story is a waste of space when there are bigger stories every day

This is a fantastic story. I bet Max has to pay a goliath sized fine for killing the endangered species. Some possible headlines:

-Max "Hurricane" Mayfield Catches a Big Fine
-Max Busted in Illegal Fishing Attempt
-Ex-Hurricane Chief Makes a Fishing No No
-Max Can Predict Hurricanes But He Sure Can't Fish
-Fishing Trip Will Cost Max Plenty
-Max Makes a Goliath Sized Error

Anything involving the killing of an endangered species is always news because it is so crucial that we stop sports fisherman from killing these animals.

What should also be in the news is that Max Mayfield warned everyone living on the coast that they are in huge danger from massive hurricanes because of the crappy building codes that exist in the south because of crooked politicians.

Oh, yes it is a fantastic story. And Max very well may have killed the fish. Didn't you read the article you started this thread with? It explains why this law exists and why it is wrong to drag goliath groupers onto your boat.

The Goliath grouper is a protected species, so bringing one into the boat is illegal, even if for a few minutes. Doing so can damage a protective slime covering the fish.

Max may very well have deslimed the goliath grouper which will eventually kill it. This is why we cannot allow ignorant sports fisherman to go around killing off our precious natural resources. His license should be revoked as should the license of any sports fisherman ignorant of the fishing laws. His super hurricane fighter status does not mean he gets to break the law and go around killing endangered species.

"super hurricane fighter"?

I don't think he woke up that morning and said to himself "I'm going to go kill a endangered species today",it was just a accident.

ok, so what was he supposed to do? just cut the line and leave the hook in its mouth? All fish have a protective slime covering on them, and I dont see all of them on the endangered list. Not to mention he probably didnt even know he had one until he brought it into the boat (he doesnt exactly have a camera on his line) I dont see what the issue is with him being 'busted', thats like ignoring a murderer on the lose to feed news of someone streaking.

The law is there to protect the endangered fish from going extinct. The other fish with protective slime covering probably aren't on the list because there are still many of them left in the ocean. These are important laws that exist to protect our natural resources. If these fish go extinct they will be gone forever. Just because it was mistake doesn't mean someone does not get fined or lose their fishing license. Mayfield should have read the current fishing laws. Anyone who is not up-to-date on the existing fishing laws should not fish.

And how are we supposed to determine who is an ignorant sports fisherman and who isn't? Are we going to make everyone take a long test to determine this before we issue any licences? No one is saying Mayfield or anyone else should be exempt from the laws. What I want to know is how is someone supposed to know what kind of fish they have on the line before they land it? Next is the fact that if someone catches one of these and realizes it are they supposed to leave the hook in and just throw their fishing gear overboard? Even cutting the line and leaving the hook in is going to eventually kill it. I am all for protecting the fish, but it appears to me that this law is somewhat unrealistic the way it is written. Now, if he had come into port with the fish then fine him and do whatever else is required by the law, but if he let it go then he was doing what most anyone else would normally do. And I still want to know why he was singled out for publicity when you know that this happens plenty of times to other fishermen and is never published in paper.

If it is really that difficult for the sports fisherman to keep from hooking or catching endangered fish then that's probably why sports fishing is more and more likely to get banned in the future as more and more fish became endangered and the coast becomes more overfished. He was probably singled out because people know who he is. The downside of being a public figure.

I think he was noticed because the picture was put in a newspaper. The real culperate is the man holding the charter captains licence who has a duty to know. If this story prevents others from making the same mistake then there is a real benefit.
