Favio Graphic Error

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:20 pm

Question:

Are the persons on charge of doing these graphics experts on tropical Meteorology?

Image

How on Earth a 100 knots (115 mph) cyclone can be called a tropical storm? Not very professional. Just the nicely-developed eye should give a clue that this is no tropical storm.

Sandy.

Nice catch. I believe the text indicating a tropical storm is based on an earlier advisory when the system was near Madagascar and this was mistakenly inserted with the captioning for this still image for the cyclone when it was mature. I have seen similar previous errors with the captioning for these NESDIS images.

I was in reference to advisories from the JTWC and tropical cyclone center for the region that classified Favio as a tropical storm when it was just east of the southern tip of Madagascar; thus, the text "tropical storm" could have been misplaced from an earlier image (not the one you're showing) when Favio was a tropical storm just east of the southern tip of the island and was instead mistakenly inserted into the first image in this topic when the tropical cyclone was nearing it's Mozambique landfall.

The last time the JTWC said Favio was a tropical storm before making landfall was on the 19th of February. The image is from the 21st fo February. It doesn't match.

Image

Also, look where did the JTWC declared Favio "tropical cyclone," south of Madagascar, while in the picture Favio is alreay in the middle of the Mozambique Channel.

That's true. You are certainly correct and this is part of my point. My main point demonstrates that the "tropical storm" error could have been inserted into the caption for the image from an earlier JTWC or tropical cyclone center advisory when Favio was east of Madagascar when it was a developing tropical storm with one-minute winds below 65KT (which is what you mentioned); thus, the text for the image could be based off earlier data when the cyclone was east of Madagascar by mistake. This could be the mistake that has resulted in a misclassification for the image.
