Pet Food Recalled After Animal Deaths
Last Update: Mar 16, 2007 4:19 PM

A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small oil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site - http://www.menufoods.com/recall - early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (800) 551-7392.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said. The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said.

The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

You're Welcome Kelly. We have many pet owners here at S2K and I worried someone would feed their pets this type of food. I hope your cat is okay!

We feed our dog Purina, Healthy Weight dry food. She loves it and the Vet approves. But I'm always careful when I read an article heading like this one b/c it could very well be our brand of pet food someday.

Sad that pets died though. :-(

The food is all gravy-style dog and cat food sold since early December 2006.
The pet food was sold under Kroger, Safeway, and Wal-Mart house brands.

And more for those who use Mighty Dog brand:

Purina to Voluntarily Withdraw Mighty Dog(R) 5.3 Ounce Pouch Products in Response to Menu Foods Recall

No other Purina products affected

ST. LOUIS, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Nestle Purina PetCare Company today
announced that as a precautionary measure, it is voluntarily withdrawing
its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog(R) brand pouch products that were produced by Menu
Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007. This withdrawal
is in response to the recall initiated earlier today by Menu Foods, a
contract manufacturer that does limited business with Purina as well as
with other pet food manufacturers. Only Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products
are being withdrawn by Nestle Purina, including those pouches contained in
multi-packs. Importantly, no Mighty Dog canned products, or any other
Purina products are affected by Menu's recall.
While Purina has no indication of any product quality or safety issues
specifically related to our Mighty Dog pouch products, Purina is taking
this proactive action out of an abundance of caution in response to the
Menu Foods recall.
Consumers who have the indicated Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products
should discontinue feeding them to their dogs and can receive the full
replacement value of the withdrawn products by calling 1-800-551-7392.
The Mighty Dog pouch products and pouches in multi-pack cartons have
code dates of 6337 through 7073, followed by the plant code 1798. This
information is located on the bottom or back panel of the pouches or
cartons. Specifically, if the code following the "Use By" date begins with
four numbers from 6337 to 7073 followed by the plant code 1798, then the
pouch is included in this voluntary withdrawal.
Purina regrets any inconvenience and apologizes for any concern caused
by this product withdrawal. The Company will continue to take any and all
actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products.

Story Highlights:
• Recall of wet pet food made by Menu Foods for Wal-Mart, Kroger, PetsMart, others

Mass recall of dog and cat food after pets die

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pet owners were worried Saturday that the pet food in their cupboards could be deadly after millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America were recalled.

Menu Foods -- a major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands -- recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said in announcing the North American recall.

Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer.

However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

'Cuts and gravy' food sold in cans, pouches recalled

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between December 3 and March 6 throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Co., Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods said it makes pet foods for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

Proctor & Gamble announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kansas, and Pennsauken, New Jersey, Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

FDA also working to target brands

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority-owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

Below are lists of specific brands recalled by Menu Foods, in addition to Proctor & Gamble's recall of certain Iams and Eukanuba products. Menu Brands lists the brands on its Web site, http://www.menufoods.com, and advises consumers to call 1-866-895-2708 for more information.

And to think that they promote IAMS for a pets health? That is just so sad about the cats in Navarre! :( IMO they are not working fast enough to find out what happened.

I had heard on the radio this morning that the pet foods in question were known to be contaminated. The talk show mentioned a link at Drudge. Here it is:

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070320/pet_food_recall.html?.v=1

Friday's recall came two weeks after nine cats died during routine company taste tests of its products, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Doesn't that sound suspicious?

We checked menufoods for problems with Alpo, but thankfully it wasn't there. Our dog only gets it a couple of times per month, when we might be out for dinner. This is one of those times that I'm really glad she eats what we eat.

Alex the dog gets canned Alpo "Gravy & whatever" by Purina - it's been her diet for 12 years.
I try to change up the flavors.I was glad to NOT see her food on the list!

Iams used to have a good reputation for a petfood and i don't know if P&G changed anything after they bought them. My pets eat Iams and one eats beneful.

I imagine there will be a fall out over this recall. Someone will step down from their position/job here. Just a hunch I have.

We tried getting our dog to eat Iams but it's too plain. She loves Beneful (healthy weight management, for adult dogs). We add 2 tablespoons of Flaxseed Oil from the Health Food store to her food, spaced out over 2 meals, along with canned salt free green beans (we call them GB's) and combined, she has a beautiful coat and doesn't pester us too much for food (usually!).

But as I've fed her the past few days I am grateful I didn't feed her this wet type dog food. Very! Those poor animals that died, how they must have suffered. And the owners - how terribly sad they must feel.

That's why I think somewhere down the line there will be fall out here. Either in sales or someone resigning their position with Iams.

Wheat Gluten Could Be Contaminating Pet Food
Posted By: Tom Mckee

Menu Foods
Federal investigators are focusing on wheat gluten as the likely source of contamination of pet food that sparked a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of the suspected product.

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) said tests were conducted after complaints were received about the products from Menu Foods of Ontario, Canada, poisoning pets.

During the tests the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats.

The contamination appeared more deadly to cats than dogs.

Investigators are also looking at other ingredients used to make the wet-style food at Menu Foods in Ontario, Canada.

The recall covers dog food sold throughout North America under 51 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands.

That includes Procter & Gamble's Iams and Eukanuba.

The food is sold under both store and major brand labels at Kroger, Wal-Mart, Safeway and other large retailers.

The specific product is the "cuts and gravy" style cans and pouches made between December 3, 2006 and March 7, 2007.

Dr. Doug Hoffman, Managing Partner of the CARE Center in Blue Ash, said his practice has seen two confirmed and one possible case of kidney failure in the past 24 hours.

"It's so new I don't think we've seen all the cases yet that are going to come out of this," Dr. Hoffman said.

Dr. Hoffman said the cause of the kidney problems isn't 100% known yet.
"They're not sure of the mechanism of it," he said. "If we knew that we might be able to treat it better or get a better prognosis."

Symptoms of kidney failure in pets includes not eating, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, increased thirst and increased urination.

Veterinarians said pets that show those signs should be checked.

Eileen Gouvan's seven-year-old Calico cat, Patches, stopped eating and started vomiting two weeks ago.

"I was trying to coax her to eat, thinking this was what she needed to regain her strength and health," she said, wiping away tears.

Instead, Patches' health declined and was put down March 10 due to kidney failure.

She believes the cat food she was feeding Patches is to blame. It's on the recall list.

"I'm just angry that my cat had to suffer so bad," Gouvan said.

Dr. Hoffman said the best advice for any pet owner is to become familiar with the foods on the recall list.

If your pet has been eating one of those products have him or her checked by a veterinarian.

That will prove whether the pet is healthy and allow early treatment of the kidneys if needed.

The full list of the recalled dog and cat foods is as follows:
