Tribe opens Grand Canyon Skywalk
Former astronauts, Hualapai leaders take ‘magnificent first walk’

HUALAPAI INDIAN RESERVATION, Arizona - Indian leaders and former astronauts stepped gingerly beyond the Grand Canyon’s rim Tuesday, staring through the glass floor and into the 4,000-foot chasm below during the opening ceremony for a new observation deck.

A few members of the Hualapai Indian Tribe, which allowed the Grand Canyon Skywalk to be built, hopped up and down on the horseshoe-shaped structure. At its edge — 70 feet beyond the rim — the group peeked over the glass wall.

“I can hear the glass cracking!” Hualapai Chairman Charlie Vaughn said playfully.

The deck is anchored deep into a limestone cliff. As people walk across it, the glass layers creak and the deck wobbles almost imperceptibly. To one side, the Colorado river appears as a slim, pea-green ribbon. To the other is a triangular dip in the canyon’s ridge, known as “Eagle Point” because it looks like a bird with outstretched wings.

When the wind blows, only the most daring visitors resist grabbing the steel rail to steady their knees.

Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who was invited to join the tribe along with former astronaut John Herrington, declared it a “magnificent first walk.”

“It felt wonderful; not exactly like floating on air,” Aldrin said after stepping off the deck.

The Hualapai, whose reservation is about 90 miles west of Grand Canyon National Park, allowed Las Vegas developer David Jin to build the $30 million Skywalk in hopes of creating a unique attraction on their section of the canyon.

“To me, I believe this is going to help us. We don’t get any help from the outside, so, why not?” said Dallas Quasula Sr., 74, a tribal elder who was at the Skywalk. “This is going to be our bread and butter.”

The tribe will include access to the deck in a variety of tour packages ranging from $49.95 to $199.00. They’ll allow up to 120 people at a time to look down to the canyon floor more than 4,000 feet below, a vantage point more than twice as high as the world’s tallest buildings.

The Skywalk is scheduled to open to the public March 28.

To reach the transparent deck, tourists must drive drive 14 miles on twisty, unpaved roads. But the tribe hopes it becomes the centerpiece of a budding tourism industry that includes helicopter tours, river rafting, a cowboy town and a museum of Indian replica homes.

Robert Bravo Jr., operations manager of the Hualapai tourist attractions called Grand Canyon West, said he hopes the Skywalk will double tourist traffic to the reservation this year, from about 300,000 visitors to about 600,000.

Wow, that's scary. The glass floor in Toronto's CN Tower was scary enough!

Grand Canyon does seem so deep until you actually go and see it for yourself. It's absolutely breathtaking.

Shoot--- I won't even get up on the 2nd step of the step ladder in our kitchen. It sounds like an amazing view, though.

It may look like a beautiful view from there, but it's a little too much for me as well.

Isn't the spectacle of seeing the Grand Canyon all about the WHOLE thing -- width and depth? I wouldn't be scared to go out on the skywalk, but I wouldn't pay $25 to have a limited view. I'd rather stand at a better outlook point (for free), without a bunch of other spectators blocking my view, and see it as a whole, the way it's meant to be seen -- big, wide, open, and -- well -- Grand!

I've taken video, standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, and, I mean, the EDGE - shooting downward
so people can somewhat see the depth and magnificence of it. It was my rush and their rush. Then, I turned
the camera off and enjoyed my own view. You just have to BE there to experience it!

The Skywalk would probably frighten me more than my video!

More power to anyone brave enough to walk out onto this thing.

Me? I'd be standing on the sides, on sure footing and on ground, watching. And cheering you on!

I'm with you Linda, no way would I ever walk out onto that thing. It would freak me out I tell you. I know I could not walk out onto it. Maybe crawl, but definitely not walk!!!!

X2!!!! I could just see a gust of wind or me being careless or too much weight on it and falling. Not only that if im more than 5 feet off the ground I get paranoid and hold on for dear life.

I saw that on the news yesterday. What an awesome thing, I would love to go out there and have a looksie. I would do it in a heart beat, and would pay the 25 bucks no problem.

Hey all - this contraption is the stuff of nightmares, for me anyways! You know how soon after you fall asleep but something awakens you and you jerk, as if you're falling off a cliff? Yep, that's what this experience would be for me......dizzy - I'm with you, I'd have to be dragged onto this thing.....LOL Or heavily drugged!!!

Or maybe George Clooney could hold my hand....now there's a thought!!! Or let's see, John Cusack......he he
