This has been a wild day yesterday...weatherwise. A thunderstorm was forming in Stephenville, then it has increased in coverage and intensity. Penny-size hail, heavy rain, and cloud to ground lightning were reported in Denton, Tarrant and western Dallas Counties that afternoon before slowly dissipating and moving east. The Flash Flood Watch that was in effect for the cities of Athens, Corsicana, Fairfield, and Palestine was cancelled around 3:00AM CDT. The rain continues to be in the DFW forecast at least to the weekend, not to mention some dense fog will be developing tonight into tomorrow morning.

This is gonna be a nice St. Patrick's Day for everyone here in the North Texas region (by mid-day). Judging from today's forecast, nothing will rain on some cities hosting their Parades. However, the beginning of the work/school week (and end of Spring Break) is gonna start out windy with gusts as high as 30 MPH and from Monday Night on, we'll see some thunderstorms, a few of which could possibly turn severe, so we're gonna have to keep our eyes peeled on that...and hopefully we'll get some beneficial rain.

The North Texas area is preparing for a wet week ahead starting Monday Night as a slow moving storm system moves into the region. Our best chances of rain will be on Thursday and Friday, a few of those storms could reach severe limits.

As I reiterate, we're gonna have a soaking week after coming back from Spring Break. A slow-moving storm system will move into this region by Midnight tonight bringing some showers and thunderstorms. For tonight, they'll remain below severe limits. The next 7 days however, our best chances will be this weekend where flooding is the only severe threat.

Latest NWS update suggests the rain threat is less than first thought.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
1013 AM CDT MON MAR 19 2007

.UPDATE...
LIGHT SPRINKLES SHOWING UP ON KEWX RADAR NEAR BURNET...THUS HAS
ADDED SPRINKLES TO THE SOUTHWEST CWA THIS AFTERNOON.

OTHERWISE...850 MB MEGA-CAP ON 12Z FWD SOUNDING IMPLIES A MUCH LESS
OR NO CHANCE OF MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION TODAY. ALSO DUE TO THE
CAP...HAVE ADJUSTED AND TRIMMED TONIGHT/S AND TUESDAY/S POPS
DOWNWARD. MADE SOME ADJUSTMENT TO CLOUDS OVER THE NORTHWEST QUARTER
WHERE SUNSHINE IS ABUNDANT THIS MORNING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON.
REST OF THE CWA SHOULD REMAIN MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH BREAKS SHOWING UP
BY LATE AFTERNOON AND DURING THE EARLY EVENING HOURS.

AS FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK...STRONG UPPER AIR LOW IS PROGGED TO
DROP INTO NORTHERN MEXICO AND KICK OUT NORTHEAST INTO THE CENTRAL
PLAINS BY SUNDAY. THIS TRACK SUGGESTS THAT MOST OF THE HEAVY
RAINFALL AND CONVECTION WILL FAVOR AREAS TO OUR WEST AND ALONG A
COLD FRONT (BAROCLINIC ZONE) STALLED ACROSS NORTHERN OKLAHOMA. LAST
NIGHT/S FORECAST HAS TRENDED TO LESS POPS WED-SUN DUE TO THIS
EXPECTATION. 75

At this point, we're seeing some spotty showers in the western portions of North Texas bringing a trace of rain. Most of these won't reach the immediate DFW area due to the high pressure cap settling in.

.NOW...
MOIST SOUTHERLY FLOW THIS MORNING HAS RESULTED IN SOME PATCHY
DRIZZLE AND SPRINKLES OVER NORTH TEXAS. ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE
NEGLIGIBLE...BUT MAY BE ENOUGH TO WET THE PAVEMENT. REMEMBER TO
SLOW DOWN WHEN DRIVING ON WET ROADS.

If the cap breaks, we can see some showers and thunderstorms over the weekend with some of those reaching severe limits. But if the cap holds, don't expect anything but another depressing drought.

Remember me saying that we may not get some rain today? I take that back, we got some rain in the Irving area. A thin line of showers and thunderstorms which was probably flinged from the upcoming storm system passed through the area bringing a trace, if not .02 in. of rain. We can probably expect the same thing tonight through Friday before a possible deluge takes place.

Yesterday afternoon, a small line of thunderstorms caught us by surprise. DFW Airport picked up .01 in. while areas to the south got bigger amounts. Will the same thing happen again today through the weekend, and will a few of those storms turn severe? Only time will tell.

The first day of spring was a nice one, except for a few spotty showers and drizzle, but we could use every drop of it. Today, the western 1/2 of North Texas will be seeing some isolated thunderstorms. None of the storms will be severe, however this weekend will be a totally different story as locally heavy rainfall and damaging winds are the only threats so far.

Drought not over. And there is a mention of La Nina forming in this article. That is not good news for drought-stricken NTX.

Experts: Dry spell not over

Some say drought over, others say no – but all urge conservation

12:06 AM CDT on Thursday, March 22, 2007
By ROY APPLETON / The Dallas Morning News
rappleton@dallasnews.com

The North Texas drought is done. That's the latest view, by some assessments at least, of the area's water and soil situation. But local water suppliers, facing limited sources and a growing demand, say that that now is no time to change conservation plans and restrictions.

"From our perspective, we're not out of the drought," said Mike Rickman, executive assistant at the North Texas Municipal Water District. "A drought is not over until the lakes refill."

An abnormally wet autumn and winter recharged local lakes and landscapes. But most Dallas-area reservoirs remain less than full, with water levels below those of a year ago. Weather forecasters are calling for an abnormally dry spring, the third in a row. And local officials are reviving, retaining or tweaking efforts to reduce water consumption.

...

Cooler-than-normal water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean are setting up a La Niña weather pattern that tends to keep rain-producing storms north of Texas, Mr. Huckaby said.

"The important thing for us is what happens during our rainy season," he said. "For now, it doesn't look so good.

That's the last thing we wanna hear in North Texas.

Anyways, we have some showers and sprinkles west of the immediate DFW area. Rainfall amounts will be generally a trace or a few hundreds of an inch.

So far, this has been a sprinkly first week of Spring with isolated drizzle and light rain showers popping up and quickly disipating. Of course, not everyone is getting the rain due to the revenge of the high pressure cap which (for some reason) is glued in place not only over North Texas but in South Central Texas as well. Sunday night into Monday, however, our region will be getting a much needed shot in the arm after an upper level disturbance pushes the cap away from our area. Until then, we'll continue to see spotty showers throughout Tonight. As of right now, we're seeing some showers north of the DFW Metroplex.

Today, we're gonna have a break from the drizzly system...at least until Sunday Night as several upper level disturbances pass through the North Texas region, trying to break the high pressure cap...or at least push it away from the North Texas region. Severe weather is possible in the middle of the week with large hail, and damaging winds being the only threats for Wednesday Night and Thursday.

As mentioned yesterday, we're gonna get some rain...if the storm system will stop teasing us. A few of these storms will become strong, but should remain below severe limits. However, localized flooding seem to be the only threat in North Texas. At this hour, we have some showers in the western areas of North Texas moving North. However, the rain will be more widespread throughout the day.

We're (finally) seeing some thunderstorms Tonight through Tuesday after an opper level disturbance has been teasing us while a certain high pressure was sitting on this region like a couch potato. Of course, a few of these storms may turn severe with hail, cloud-to-ground lightning and danaging winds being the main threats, however, locally heavy rainfall is possible.
