Iran seizes U.K. troops=The 15 sailors are back home

#1 Postby fwbbreeze » Fri Mar 23, 2007 7:32 am

thought I would start a new thread since this is a different subject than the nuclear threat.

from CNN: Breaking News

"Britain's Ministry of Defense confirms to CNN that Iranian naval vessels have seized 15 British Navy personnel on patrol in the Persian Gulf."

more info to follow as it becomes available.

Reminds me of the standoff between the U.S. and China over those aviators that had to make an emergency landing in China back in 2001. Anybody remember that incident?

just send 1,000 planes and level Tehran

That is what it is going to take to prove to Iran and the rest of the world that we will NOT TOLERATE this crap. It may also be the only way to definitively win this and could help us in Iraq by eliminating the Iranian elements.

They ran to Saddam for peace terms very quickly in 1988 after Regan dropped half of their surface fleet in a mere one afternoon, so that they didn't have to accept Regan's terms. We need to make yet another definitive stand against Iran today (I really don't want another prolonged war)

Respectfully disagree that this is what the US needs to do Derek, but we all have our opinions. I don't want this thread to spiral out of control so I will leave my comment at that.

I read that there was a similar incident with the British in 2004. I hope this one has the same conclusion.

That's a brilliant idea with 150,000 troops next door in an already bad situation.

Please do not get into this type of debate. It serves no purpose and just causes trouble. Please keep it civil.

So, exactly where were the British naval personnel? I know the Ministry of Defense says they were in Iraqi territorial waters, but c'mon....every nation (well, the ones which have a powerful navy anyway) fudges a bit and spies when convenient. The US would base submarines right off the Soviet coastline. It isn't a far-fetched notion. Maybe the Royal Navy got caught....or Iran kidnapped British personnel.

Well, I pretty much agree with the stuff Derek was saying earlier. Give the Iranian government 72 hours to release these saliors and explain themselves, or send in the planes. Please don't mistake this for a political statement ,an act of war is an act of war, whoever you support.

This is terrible. Hopefully the British can get this resolved on their own with the Iranian government.

That whole area is just dangerous and chaotic. I hope it isn't just the beginning, Lindaloo.

I wont be suprised if we go to war with Iran. I've thought it would happen for a few years now. I think if we go to war with iran that it will be very deadly because there may be a nuclear war, I also think that Kim Jong Ill may follow behind that in Irans footsteps. I would say more but it may be considered political :(

Cooler heads should prevail. This is not a causus belli. The Iranians will probably return the sailors and will be making a grave mistake if they do not. It seems more likely that this time the Iranians seized British sailors in Iraqi territory, though last time in 2004 they were most likely in Iranian. These incidents are disturbing. Iranian responsiveness might be getting tested on purpose.
