Afraid to post?

#1 Postby Lindaloo » Mon Apr 02, 2007 9:56 pm

It has come to our attention that some people are afraid to post. There is no reason for anyone to be afraid to post here. People have different opinions about alot of things, topics can and will go a different way. But, there should be no reason that anyone should be afraid.

Anyway, we would like some input on this matter since it was said that SOME people do not post for this reason. We always welcome ways to improve things for everyone. If you only tell one person this then the problems will not be solved. We here work as a team and are willing to listen to your thoughts (no matter what).

Don't be afraid people! Come join in the fun.

I personally spend a good bit of time away from the boards, but that is because I am dealing with school work and such.

I'm only afraid to post certain things, some things I may not think are political, 3 years ago I got reamed for posting something which I didn't think had anything political about it, I got upset, stopped coming for a while, then when I tried to sign back on I couldn't remember my old password so changed my log-in name. Also I don't dare post anything on religion here, I hold my beliefs very dear and if I get slammed I am going to slam back big time; no one here has seen me get nasty and trust me if I get fired up it won't be pretty and I'd get banned in a heartbeat, so I keep quiet, I like this board and don't want to jeopardize coming here.

I'm not afraid to post. If I'm not sure something is appropriate, then I email a mod first to get their opinion. I've learned that if I'm not sure its appropriate, then its usually not appropriate. I've also learned if I'm angry at something that someone has posted its best not to respond until I've had time to think and respond as an adult. Some topics are best left alone. I've been busy with my genealogy and diggin up bones. I do check in often. Love yall.

I can't imagine why anyone would feel afraid to post something here at S2K. If a member flames another member for posting something, I'm fairly certain we have always taken care of the troublemaker. If anyone is harassed by or feels attacked by another member, please don't be afraid to PM a moderator.

The rules are spelled out quite clear. As long as no one posts anything in violation of those rules, they should not feel afraid to post here.

I don't think I can say it any better than this. :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow:

If you feel "afraid" to post here I can't imagine why. We do everything we can to make this a comfortable atmosphere for EVERYONE. If you are unsure if something can/should be posted based on the rules then ALWAYS feel free to contact a staff member for assistance. If we aren't taking care of the "troublemakers", then let us know. WE ARE ALWAYS OPEN TO CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.

Post away!!

Ok,Nows my chance, not sitting quietly for this one.....Afraid, oh puhlease! IF anyone is , its because the staff here has made it that way. Opinionated and judgemental is the way I see it.....How come some folks can get away with just about anything, while others who express opinions are shot down like a plane in a dogfight? Don't shake yer head and pretend you dunno what or who I am talking about. Hell, even one of the most beloved, admired, and respected members of this community has considered never even posting again because of some of the hypocracy going on. I won't name names, thats not my style.

I'm sure I'll be accused of sour grapes, but in all honesty I could personally care less what goes on here outside of a few genuinely wonderful people. They know who they are, and what they mean to me. Lets just say I keep in touch and stay informed, and the people I have heard from are getting completely fed up with the holier than thou attitude that some of the mod staff conveys.

Just my opinion for what its worth...oh wait! I'm not allowed to have one of those, that is unless the staff agrees with me !

I'm not sure who has gotten away with anything, but if you have specific issues or threads that you would care to share with the staff in a PM, please feel free to do so.

Remember, you guys don't always see what happens behind the scenes since we try to remove offensive material in a timely manner and then deal with the members privately. Also, there may be some members here who you simply haven't noticed aren't still around because they were dealt with quietly after a fair number of warnings. There are a lot of things that I hope you never have seen on this board because we cleared it away before too many eyes took notice.

Futhermore, please remember that we do this on a voluntary basis. We do not get paid to be moderators here at S2K. We do it out of love and loyalty for the board. I believe most, if not all, of us have jobs and families. We aren't always here on a regular basis and there is a chance that we may miss something. So, please bring to our attention if something offends you or a member is harassing you.

As far as opinions are concerned, I don't think we've ever had a problem with anyone voicing their opinion, although you may find someone who disagrees with you may want to get into a lively discussion. As long as it's not political nor inflammatory, I'm pretty sure I can safely say we've always allowed a diverse range of opinions.

Please correct me if I'm wrong and let us know how we can make things better.

I don't post anything specifically about politics or religion; not because I'm afraid, but because I don't see how such discussions can ever be fun and/or productive. Other than those two topics, its' all fair game in my book, so C'mon people post!

Back when we had a politics forum, things would get kind of out of hand in there (I'm as guilty as anyone) but since that time it seems to me that things run quite amicably around here, even in the current events type threads that could very well get overly political if we let them.

Ok. I'll bite.

I'm not afraid to post, just not into it the way I once was.

I've just been alienated one time too many I guess.

I once pointed out a case of libel in a thread. Well, of course, no good deed goes unpunished and I was invited to find another forum in which to post by a staff member.

In the same thread, a member called anyone who disagreed with him "evil." I pointed out that it wasn't an apprpopriate thing to say. I got jumped for that too.

In many threads I and other members have been deletion victims. By this I mean, a topic is being debated when a staff member closes the thread and deletes every post back to the last thing he/she said so that he/she has the last word. On top of that, there's no courtesy of a PM, just an unexplained deletion of what may be a very good post. Little things like that are EXTREMELY irritating.

Basically, there is sometimes a feeling by many members that they're back in high school and are not in the "clique." I could go on and on, but I'd get in all sorts of trouble, so I'll just offer those few examples a bit of advice: some of the best boards on the internet are the ones which have moderators who disagree with each other, are from different geogrpahical backgrounds, political persuasions and philisophical backgrounds. This assures that one mindset doesn't always prevail and that every other mindset won't feel left out.

Feel free to flame away. 8-)

Regit - you will receive no flaming from me. No siree. And I also HATE cliques!

That said, I was asked earlier today to please respond to this topic. By its author. So since you did ask Linda, I am going to answer. What I have to say will not be pretty but it HAS to be said.

First off, the question asks - am I afraid to post? No! I am not afraid. I am not afraid of anyone here. That said (I love that phrase), I have been reluctant to post an opinion b/c let's face it and this is where the S2K Admin and Mods and I part ways - big time - it is true and you can argue with me all day long, until the cows come home honey (stealing a phrase from my good friend above, TLC, which by the way, you go girl) that if you post an opinion that does differ with the Admin, mods or the clique (which I want to be no part of, in any way, shape or form), you will hear about it.

Doesn't matter what your opinion is on, if it doesn't sit well, you'll hear about it.

I joined this website for the comraderie I felt here. A one for all, all for one attitude. Mainly because TWC's message had become too Stepford Wives kinda board. I did not want to be a programmed poster. And I will be darned if I'll become one here.

Now you can flame me all you want, ask what specific examples I have to back up my opinions (sorry didn't save old deleted posts/topics), but there is that vibe here. If you say it doesn't exist, well then you've been posting on a Stepford world kinda place. Or living in one.

One word is missing here and it is respect. Respect goes both ways. Instead of clamping down on an opposing, out there opinion someone else might have, perhaps we need a 15 minute rule. Read, fume, rant, rave, whatever, but wait 15 minutes before replying. OR put yourself in that person's shoes for a few minutes. Try to see their point of view.

Delete my account, if I've crossed a line here. I don't mind. But I was asked to give my opinion and I cannot do so without being flat out honest.

Mary
