Models Still Suggest Rare April Snow for N. Texas

#1 Postby donsutherland1 » Fri Apr 06, 2007 6:54 am

With the computer guidance continuing to suggest that some snow could fall in portions of northern Texas Saturday night and Sunday, it should be noted that such an occurrence is quite rare. However, it has occurred even later in the past.

On April 21, 1884, The New York Times wrote of the weather in Texas for April 20, "Dispatches to the News [Galveston News] from all parts of the State report heavy rains and a norther and probably great damage to crops. Hail [sleet] and snow are reported from several points."

The wintry weather was fairly widespread. That same day, Chicago reported, "heavy gales from the northeast, accompanied by snow which melted as it fell" throughout the day.

This should be interesting. I have been hearing that we might see sleet and even snow!

I ran in the Susan G Komen 5k this morning and as we were finishing the snow was falling quite hard on us. Simply amazing!

It sure was fun but really weird... It's the most snowfall we've had since Jan 13th 1982.. And it happened in April...
We got 2 inches here in northern polk county about 80 miles north of houston..
It took forever to start accumulating because of the 60 degree ground temps.... Maybe we get 6-10 inches if the grounds temps would have been colder..... This is the first measurable snowfall in April since the early 1800's..

There was a nice east west band of 1-6 inch snowfall from west of Temple Texas to Diboll Texas and north of that line for about 30 miles..
