NOAA aircrafts fly out of MacDill AFB, Tampa... They are funded through NOAA/NHC for their flights. The aircrafts are P-3 Orion

AFRES aircrafts fly out of Keesler AFB, MS.... They are funded through Department of Defense and NHC for their flights. The aircraft is WC130J.

I have been aboard both type planes. Worth the visit for sure. The NOAA plane has a lot more "stuff" on it. The AFRES has a lot more room. Crew from both planes were very willing to answer questions and share their experiences. Take some cash if you visit the NOAA plane. The visit is obviously free but they sometimes have caps and shirts to sell. Cash only.

I went today, it was AWSOME. I toured the plane and talked to some Hurricane hunters (Heard some stories of the imfamous Hugo flight). In fact, that was the plane that went on that imfamous flight. (Still a few dents left over from it according to a few of the workers).

Bill Proenza was there but regretfully I didn't get a chance to talk to him.

Pojo...i'm assuming that the decals of the hurricane names are from that plane actually flying through those hurricanes?

Tks for the heads up Cat5. I was totally unaware of the tour. After reading the article I realized that they will be at the USCG Air Staiton in Elizabeth City tommorow, a 45 minute drive. I called the air station op center and sure enough it will be there and open to the gp from 9 to 5. Our local small time paper didn't even mention it, nor did the Virginian Pilot our local large paper (Hampton Roads, circ 200k). And the op center had to find out about it, strange.

I'm guessing.... I don't fly on the NOAA birds. I fly on the USAF RES WC130J birds... we don't have the decals on our plane

Defanitly worth the visit. Alot of cool stuff.

I had alot of intresting conversations with Hurricane Hunters, Pro Mets, and some guys from the Geophyiscal Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). Trust me, you'll learn plenty while you're there.

Bring a bag, theres plenty of intresting pamphlets, guides, and posters to pick up.
