In response to the comments this morning..
I have seen a few severe events since living here (moved to Houston in 2005), but nothing siginificant since last year. My biggest event of them all (so far) was the May 4th, 2006 hail storm when I recieved an hour of marble to tennis ball sized hail. That storm was crazy! Also, Hurricane Rita was moderately bad for a wind storm. Her gusts had nothing on the Florida hurricanes I went through, but they were still strong enough to down a a few trees, break a few branches and blow down a sign or two in my immediate vicinity. One of those downed trees (a palm tree) is still visibly bent from Rita's winds almost 2 years later and after many attempts to straighten it. There was also a good storm that came through last October that knocked down a few area pines. The worst part about that storm was the fact that I was caught outside dodging falling branches during the first half of it. That was a pretty scary moment! Other than those events though, the last 6 months or so have been primarily quiet in my neck of the woods (in terms of a damaging event).

Other than hurricane Alicia, this was the worst storm system I can recall in Houston on Nov. 21, 1992. We had just bought our house, and this storm bought us a new roof. We saw the tornado one block behind us and ran for the hallway. In the linked article, we experienced Storm B, and tornado #2.

Is it just me, or is that line of storms moving in strengthening quite a bit? We will need to watch this carefully.

yeah, if they were to bust to cap they would become severe very quickly. However, since they are below the cap they are only going to be strong with gusts of 30-40..may be 50mph as they pass through.PTrackerLA wrote:Interesting to note that these storms are almost invisible on IR satellite imagery and the latest Houston AFD mentions that the storms are below the cap. They do look quite impressive on radar though...hopefully we'll get some rain from these later tonight.

The line is passing through here right now. I have only seen 1 bolt of lightning but the rain is pretty intense and is coming down in sheets. Also, the wind really did pick up a bit as this all moved in. Pretty frequent 20mph+ gusts with a few gusts possibly reaching the 30-40mph range. Nothing damaging, but the trees and rain was blowing around a bit. Pretty strong considering this was a "below cap" storm system (and only had one lightning bolt).
