If you are forced to evacuate
Where will you flee to? We have decided to evacuate to Disney World in the event of another Cat-3+ hurricane here. Might as well have a little fun before we go home and pick up the pieces...MGC

I did evacuate there for Charley. One of the worst Hurricanes I've ever been in.

Cat 1 or really weak Cat 2 I will stay in my house on the beach
Cat 2-3 I will stay at my sister-in-law's house about a half mile from the beach just down the road from my house, unless the storm is expected to bring a monster surge with it, or the storm was a 4 or 5 at some point in time while in the gulf.. then I'll go to Tennessee
Cat 4-5 again going to Tennessee... no use hanging around the MS Coast if we get another major storm cause things will be pretty difficult to deal with for a while...

Oh, we've thought about going to Disney World if a storm threatens this area. We know a family who did that and said it was the best thing: it helped distract them from what was going on back home. We can't really do that, though, because we have my mother with us. She just isn't into Disney any more. We have to get her out of town in the event of a storm due to her health issues. God forbid we need to evacuate, but if we must I'm sure we'll head upstate to my sister's home. We have standing reservations at their place.

I learned during Rita that Jasper, Tx. wasn't far enough north. It had worked fine for Lili in 2002, but Lili turned and hit Louisiana and didn't affect us. We just went back home the next day, and everything was normal again.
After spending several hellish days in Jasper, the town finally got some gas, so we left and went to Fort Worth. We stayed there for a while, then Houston, before coming back home to face everything. They wouldn't even let anyone in Beaumont for a while.
I'll make reservations in Fort Worth as soon as I think a hurricane could possibly come this way. They can always be canceled.
Most of my family lives around here, so we'll all go to the same hotel.

Frank,
You'll have to decide whether to evacuate LONG before you know whether you'll be facing a Cat 1 or a Cat 5. Remember that Katrina was a Cat 3 at landfall. Rita went from a 65 mph TS to a 165 mph Cat 5 in 36 hours. Wilma did it in 24 hours. We cannot accurately predict hurricane intensity, so there's no way for you to know when you go to bed one night that you'll be facing a Cat 1 or a Cat 4 in the morning. Remember Opal? Of course, you're in an area with relatively few people, so you may be able to leave closer to the time of landfall, if necessary.

Your absolutely right wxman57... I'll be ready to go on a moments notice... just like Katrina I evacuated late Sunday evening without any trouble... everything was packed, locked and loaded and will be for the next storm regardless of Category... getting to safe house in the city could be done just as the outer bands of a storm starting impacting the city... I also have a friend who lives about a block away from the beach who didn't get any water from Katrina where I can seek immediate refuge if need be.. I am still not as worried about the wind as I am the water... regardless I think I've got access to enough data, and experts like you, where I can get the necessary information I need to make a reasonable and safe decision... Katrina taught me that as she was the first storm that I ever evacuated off the beach for...
