I Need To Vent!!!!

First let me thank you for letting me get this off my chest.

Its only been 2 days into the Hurricane season and the MEDIA especially CNN and the local stations in the Tampa area

have me pissed(I hope that acceptable language).

The last thing this or any any Hurricane possible area need is hype when there is nothing to hype.

Yes Barry was a named storm but as we all know, it was nothing more than a rain storm with no decernable weather

around the circulation except for a brief period after awhile,only the east/north quadrants had any real weather to it.

My point is ,when a serious situation arises where the potential is far greater for a hurricane threat, people will feel they

have been through it and since they handled Barry-they can handle a cat 2 with no problem.

The rain was great and needed but the the local stations having Barry all over the tv and papers when is was really just a

low pressure was way overdone.

Some of you may disagree with me and your opinions are welcomed but living here for 22 years ,complacency in this area

drives me bananas because people feel they have been through a hurricane when at best Jeanne / Frances were tropical

storms.

I understand what you are saying but calling Frances/Jeane tropical storms is a bit off. I know people who live on the east coast and I'm sure they'll tell you Frances/Jeane weren't tropical storms.

Yep. I heard one of CNN's meteorologists mentioning "very, very strong winds" when just "strong winds" would have sufficed.

I meant tropical storms when they reached the greater Tampa Bay area.

I agree. FoxNews last night at 7pm had it as its lead story. They said, and I quote, "Florida braces for TS Barry." Braces? I just had to shake my head in bewilderment.

Another headline was "Target Tampa Bay"-talk about striking fear when there is none.

I stayed away from the tv last night figuring there would be hype about it. There is every year. I was surprised that during the day they didn't say a whole lot about it, though.

This is what TV news has turned into. It's all sesationalism. Hell, TWC was in Punta Gorda last night. WHY?

My guess is they were already in Punta Gorda to cover the Charley aftermath as part of their Hurricane Week special.

I know what you mean. I used to think that TWC mets in an area was synonymous with a major event especially when Jim Cantore is there. And if Cantore is there…forget it! I know he wasn’t the one there, but you know what I mean.

Having spent Frances and Jeanne in northern Palm Beach county...rest assured those were not tropical storms.

Storms can be a dud in certain areas...but that doesnt mean they are duds everywhere and that the news media shouldn't report on them. Could you imagine the cries of foul if we weren't told about hurricanes and they just snuck up on us!!!

TWC may have been in Punta Gorda yesterday for the opening of Charlotte County's new emergency operations center. Apparently, it's state of the art and a far cry from what Charlotte County's EOC personnel had at their disposal during Charley.

To those of you on the east coast-I understand that when Jeanne /Frances made landfall they were hurricanes .

When the reached the West Coast Of Florida they were Tropical storms-My brother lived in West Palm and he was there

when Hurrican Jeanne/Frances made landfall.

Frances and Jeanne were differently Hurricanes, as the damage in Indian River, St Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach County will attest to. Television stations especially need viewers and this is one way to get them. This has lead to an old news saying " If it bleeds, It LEADS" Having worked in television over 20 years ago, nothing has changes. But then again after Wilma came thru, the first question that some of the radio and television stations were getting was, where and when will the ice and water give away begin. Many had not taken the threat seriously. So which way to go, scare them silly or be reasonable? How many people do you know or work with that have commen sense. This does not include those of us here because we have common sense and a sense of wonder and awe of nature. And we understand what can happen.

There must be a fine line because it can mean life or death.

No doubt HURRICANE Frances /Jeanne give it wall to wall coverage,but Barley Tropical storm Barry-make it sound like your roof is

going to fly off-no way!

Tampa had better not get hit hard this season. I'm booked on a Carnival cruise in Jan out of Tampa. I was booked on a cruise out of New Orleans in Nov 2005 but it got cancelled due to Katrina. Hope this isn't a trend......MGC

Most people understand the difference between a tropical storm and a hurricane. They might not have all the wind speeds memorized, but they understand the difference. The people who live in prone areas and don't try to understand are just grossly negligent. If people want to ignore or maintain apathy of a risk despite all attempts to warn them, then I don't feel bad about it because it's part of living in a free country. I've always been against mandatory evacuations for that reason. The only exception is that children should have to be evacuated.
