Curious S/C Tx weather event

Went to bed last night with no mention of rain whatsoever. Awoke to a massive "derecho" heading southbound from north Texas.

This event was completely missed by the modeling and the forecasters. Guess it goes to show whose really the boss!

I saw that last night on radar... impressive line. There were quite a few warnings up as well. The reason I even checked radar was because I heard thunder. It was the first night in over a week that we had zero chance of rain, so I was curious. It didn't rain at my house, but there were some strong storms nearby.

They upped today's rain chances too.

The 2 DFW mets I watched last night saw it coming, but both said that computer guidance indicated it would stay west of the Metroplex and dissipate. However, the airmass over DFW was extremely unstable yesterday and both mentioned this, and that if it held together and tracked closer to us it would hit this unstable airmass. Boom. Around 2:30am, my weather radio went off when the Severe T-Storm Watch was posted. We got about 2 mins of rain at my house, but other parts of the metroplex saw quite a bit.

Tonight may be a repeat.

The evening forecast discussion last night out of Austin/San Antonio NWS talked about "mid-level subsidence" and how it would keep the Hill Country and Edwards Plateau dry today. Well, we got anywhere from 1/2 inch to 3 inches of rainfall around our area this morning, along with some 50-60 mph winds.

Kudos to those Dallas forecasters that saw it. I did read this morning on the NWSFO Fort Worth mid-morning discussion that the mesoscale complexes have eroded the ridge somewhat and they expect another possible event this evening.
