Stupid tornado movies....

I'm sitting here trying to enjoy some flick titled "Tornado Warning", but within 10 minutes have already become disgusted -- because the "experienced storm chaser" just told his partner "It's only a F1...probably 100 yds wide" -- BASED ON THE RADAR???

That's not only impossible to gauge from the Base Reflectivity mode; but if these two REALLY were tornado chasers, driving directly into a tornado's path (just because it's ONLY a F1) is beyond foolhardy...as any experienced (and most inexperienced) chasers know.

I saw a movie the other night about tornado research (starred Nicole Kidman as the lead scientist), that was BEYOND ridiculous. She's in the chase vehicle....telling everyone about the "F4...maybe F5 tornado they are OBSERVING ON RADAR" -- when the screen she's clearly looking at is showing the satellite loop of a major HURRICANE.

No one in the atmospheric science/ meteorology is that stupid....and (hopefully) few in the theatre audience are that gullible. Even my seven year old nephew said "Uncle Perry, that's not a radar...it's a satellite". I replied "I know Nick...that movie is totally bogus, and she's (Nicole Kidman) an idiot"

I don't know about you'll, but if the storm chaser (or meteorologist) can't tell a tornado on radar from a hurricane on satellite, I don't tend to believe anything they say

I hate it when they do that as well. Actually, all movies screw up the weather. For example, thunder and lightning always occur at the same time and the thunder never sounds real. And the rain always falls straight down...no wind.

Then, whenever they have to do weather maps or whatever, everything is beyond idealized. I can't even explain how bad it is.

And that leads me to another thing. Whenever they have computers in movies, they never, ever work like real computers. They always beep a lot and do stuff that no computer would ever do. What about showing the desktop, or a window for once, even if it is somewhat generic.

Okay, that's enough venting.

I think I attempted that movie, Perry - about 5 minutes into
it, I said, "Twister Wannabe"...EJECT...!

Twister was good and I also enjoyed another tornado movie -- though I can't remember the name of it. I aired on FOX once and it had Shannon Sturgis in it. Oh well! Night of the Twisters was bearable, but I haven't even seen any others.

You guys and gals need to head down to Universal Studios in Florida. That Twister ride is a real thrill!! It is just like you are in the movie. The scene they use is where they were at that movie theatre. Very neat thrill.

I enjoyed "Night of the Twisters" wx. Now that one with Kelly McGillis in it was dumber than dumb IMO.

If they want to make realistic tornado flicks....and not spend the budget of "Twister"; why don't they hire REAL meteorologists and REAL storm chasers to play themselves....so they don't say such stupid things as "I'm looking at a large F5 tornado roping out..it has to be a F5, because the radar says so"

I was so dissapointed in the "Hurricane Andrew Story" in 1993 because they only used Bryan Norcross in a small cameo role....while Ted Wass "starred" as Bryan Norcross. Why not let Bryan Norcross play the role of Bryan Norcross....I'm certain he knows himself better than Ted Wass does

Guys, you have to remember Twister was made in 1995 or 1996. People complain about the fake tornadoes... at the end of the movie, someone from FEMA explains that.

Just my opinion.

I agree... the general public hopefully understands the difference between a weather satellite and weather radar.

Perry, the same sort of thing happened in "The Perfect Storm." The actor who played Boston Meteorologist Todd Gross was so miscast, it truly is unbearable. Not only that but instead of using Channel 7, the station he worked for (still does, has been the chief meteorologist there since August 2002) they used another channel number.

At times like this, I just sit back and enjoy what I can. Even if it enjoying the picking apart of the movie. I am not as educated in weather as teh rest of you, but I do that with military movies. Since I spent a good part of my adult life in the military, I tend to know how fake some of the movies can be. So just sit back with a cold one, some chips and enjoy picking the movie apart.

LOL... yeah, it is fun... I have to say it myself...

I do that all the time when I watch Animal House...mistake heaven, but its a riot to watch.

Anyways, when 'bogus' weather movies are on, I'll watch until they get boring or misjudgemental...then its either turn the channel or hit the eject button.
