while we are waiting

#1 Postby wzrgirl1 » Wed Jun 20, 2007 4:43 pm

While we wait for some action, this might be a good time to share the one item in your hurricane supply kit that you could not do without if you lost power that maybe someone else would not think of. I will say my battery operated fan. :D

The #1 thing I dont want to be without is a battery operated TV. It gets really boring with the power out.

Other things on the list would be Beer and a portable generator to keep it cold. Image

I would have to say a battery operated TV. It comes in handy when you're tired of playing games.

I learned this the hard way in '04 with Frances...helped in '05 with Katrina & Wilma:

A phone (not chordless) that can plug into phone jack....can't do much with a chordless phone if you can't charge it! Costs 10 bucks maybe.

Along the same lines, a cell phone charger that can plug into your car's ashtray. Invaluable investment for 20 bucks.

(this really belongs in the Hurricane Prep forum)

I will tailor my answer to the kiddies. Some of those glow sticks that glow when you snap them. The kids have a lot of fun with them and it helps comfort the kids in the darkness withouth them wasting batteries.

I agree definitely the green cash. After Wilma and no power. We walked to the shopping center down the street since we were trapped in our development because a tree was horizontal across the entrance and exit to the development. There was a wood burning pizza place with a big sign that said gas or cash.

A filled swimming pool. After Frances and Jeanne I removed the leaves and twigs from it, and put a jug of chlorine in it each day (because of no filtration). After getting hot and sweaty working on debris removal during the day, a cool swim in the evening served as your bath. Also, during this time I just wore swimming trunks and a tee shirt all day. I jumped right in with them on - viloa, your laundry for the day is done, too! Finally, if worse comes to worst it is a source of easily sterilized drinking water.

For me, it's a battery operated book light - if I have that and a bunch of books, I'm good for a while. Also, tons of batteries for our little boombox and battery operated TV. With those and a couple of coolers full of ice, we're good :)

Gotta be my battery operated radio.
I've spent many a night listening to WWUS radio located on Big Pine Key, during and post storm. Great crew working there. They fire up Zippy the generator and take phone calls all night long. Great info, and great people live down here helping out one another post storm. I've heard some of the saddest, most humourous and heart warming stories from the local callers down here. What a great place to live.

An industrial-sized bag of Doritos. And 10 2-liters of Dr. Pepper.
