Re: NHC Director Bill Proenza reprimanded by NOAA
Problem is that Government is terribly ineffecient and it seems to take 3 people to do the job of one. Not to mention red tape, multl dept involvements, the ole pass the buck and the infamous hurry up and wait,etc... I speak with knoweldge on this having spent a few years in the military. And the last couple months trying to get variances and permiting. IT IS AMAZING HOW BIG GoVERNMENT IS. I own my own business and anyone else who does would surely agree that we would be out of business if we ran our business as the government does. Just my opinion.
By the way, I support Bill. He calls it like he sees and that is my kind of guy. He's got Bill Nelson coverin his backside so he should be ok. And that's coming from me a Republican. Bill Nelson doesn't mess around and a good guy to have on you side.

Another point also is.. they knew what they had with Proenza before appointing him to be the TPC director.. He has been outspoken his entire career. So they powers that be couldn't have been all that surprised to hear him speak his mind:):):)

Satellites are ready to go despite charges from Bill Proenza. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2007/s2879.htm

it says nothing about the quiksat - it is a different type of satellite than the ones mentioned there, if I recall correctly.

"Additionally, NESDIS processes data from other spacecraft, such as NASA’s research QuikSCAT satellite, which is used in hurricane forecast models."

Nothing in that article contradicts what Proenza has said. It's a summary of satellite resources currently online.
The fact that quickscat is far past its design lifetime and there's no replacement even close to ready is not contradicted by this article.

Exactly x-y-no. What do you bet they have received such an outcry since it was publized that they put that page up hoping those that don't have enough knowledge will think - hey , they have another satellite! There's no problem! Thus quieting the masses.
Just my opinion.

He's absolutely right, NOAA needs to focus less on their image and more on their job.
QUIKSCAT needs to be replaced, it's one of our most important tools and losing it would put us back 10 years.

My understanding is the quikscat gives us around 16% more accuracy. Living in hurricane prone Florida I want that extra 16%, thank you. I also wonder if this does not affect our insurance rates in any way knowing it could go out at any time?

It is significant Here is where I got the 16% figure.

No replacement currently is in development and the loss of QuikScat could diminish the accuracy of some hurricane forecasts by up to 16 percent, Proenza and other experts have said.
