I'd have to disagree with you, NDG - one weak sub-tropical system (which some might agree should not have been named) and one very, very ill-defined TS does not make for an "above average" season, so far...

If this were 2005, then, you'd be correct, since by July 10 we were already seeing the fifth system - two of which were hurricanes - but, this year...

As for melting ice - well, ocean levels are already on the rise - not dramatically, but, as I've heard, they are higher...

Tampa Bay Hurricane - it's just a guess on my part, but, if there is cooling due to melting polar regions, I'd guess that the cooling would only be short-lived - eventually (probably sooner than later), global warming would increase the SST, even with any temporary reduction in temps due to large amounts of melting ice...

I'd be like shining a heat lamp on that bathtub of warm water which was cooled due to several dozen ice cubes being placed in the water - after 20 or 30 minutes, the water will warm up once again, perhaps warmer than it was before the ice was introduced...
