Anyways, I live in MD and back in 2003 experienced the wrath of Hurricane (or rather Tropical Storm) Isabel. I'm trying to find any footage of television coverage of it that I can. In particular I'm trying to find Weather Channel coverage of it, but anything will do at this point. I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to offer!

I hope I've posted this in the right place, if not I apologize. I saw discussions about other past hurricanes, so this seemed to be the best place.

Hi Gary,
Are you doing video only? I wrote something up on Isabel that describes the whole history of the storm and contains two short movies of the storm track from Africa to landfall in the U.S. If you want it I'll put the link in here. Also, I think I have some TWC coverage on tape, but I'd have to dig - this could take a week or two. Let me know.

Actually, I'd love to see your write-up if you'd like to post the link. As for the TWC coverage, there's no hurry. Just put it up whenever your able to dig it up.

Re: Isabel
Thanks for posting!
If anyone else can help with this, I would really appreciate it! Like I said, I'm mostly trying to find TV coverage of Isabel from the Weather Channel and other sources, but write ups and personal videos are good too.

OK - here's the link to my write-up:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/p/z/pzl112/Meteo%20241/PROJECT_3%20HURRICANE%20ISABEL%202003.htm
I found the video, but cannot upload it - it's copyrighted. It's actually an hour long tape from Richard Horodner which has TWC stuff in it. So although I'd love to share, I think you'd have to contact him and get a copy anyway. I'm sure he'd oblige.
I hope you like the write-up. Please let me know what you think.

I knew it was only a matter of time before you found a thread called "Isabel".
Nice work in the e-port.

Phil, I loved your write-up! Very well done!
How would I go about contacting Mr. Horodner about his tape?

Thanks, Gary. Glad you liked it. For Richard's stuff, try this:

or this:
http://www.weather.gov/os/reachout/res-videos.shtml (Just search for horodner)
Once again, thanks. If you're doing a project on Isabel, please keep me in on it (PM me.) My only desires are to learn and teach.
Phil

Ha-ha to your first line. And of course I'll bet you saw my eyes light up all the way from Chicago!
And I could only say the same about your work, my friend.

Re: Isabel
Wanted to add this before the topic falls off the board. It seems to me that Isabel was a precursor to all of the Cat 5 Storms which we saw in '05. Isabel was in '03 (I think), and she was unique in that she held such a high intensity rating (Cat 5 or strong Cat 4) for many days on end. I remember seeing her "donut" eye open up. It was striking indeed, and a reminder of the kind of thing which you occasionally see in the Pacific Basin. Her "donut" eye was the first that I could remember seeing in the Atlantic Basin (since the advent of modern sat tech). Perhaps Carla, or Betsy had something of the sort, I don't know. But anyway, when Katrina opened with that "donut" eye, I knew that a Cat 5 rating could not be far behind. It reminded me of Isabel. I was really impressed by Isabel. As she moved further north she weakened some (as expected). But I was impressed with this large rotating Cat 2 "blob" which landed along the Outer Banks and then moved up along the Va. Coast, covering large swaths of land with 100 mph winds, and bringing very high tides up into the Maryland Coastal areas.

Yeah, you should check out a write-up I did on her in last year. I think you'd enjoy it:

What exactly do you mean by "donut" eye? Also, someone told me once that the eye was refered to as "annular". Does anyone have reference material on that?

Re: Isabel
Phil:
In a nutshell, Annular hurricanes are axisymmetric (round) and have a relatively large eye--hence the donut comment. The eye is typically surrounded by a ring (annulus) of convection, with no convection beyond that. They tend to hold their intensity for longer than non annular hurricanes.
Here's an excellent paper on them:
http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~kossin/articl ... icanes.pdf
...this should have been covered (even a paragraph would have been nice) in our classes.

P.S. Just for fun, and just for you...here's a BAMS article on mesovortices in Isabel form the same folder:
http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~kossin/articl ... KosSch.pdf
