Storms that have defied logic
Just thought I would throw this out there to the pro mets or anyone that wants to chime in. We have some great met's on here, and also some very knowlegeable weather enthusiasts, but I am sure with many of them, there has to be one storm that stands out that completely drove you crazy...such as a storm that continued to strengthen when everything in the environment was saying it shouldn't or maybe a storm that moved in a direction that just didn't make much sense at all. Or maybe a storm that had everything going for it, but just decided to go poof! Hopefully some of you will tell us your stories. Anyway, I thought it might be fun and interesting to hear some of them.

My namesake... it was great reading advisories saying it was going to dissipate and it continued to strengthen. Finally they just gave up on it until it was killed by shear.

Let's see. Hurricane Ivan (1980), Hurricane Vince (2005), Cyclone Catarina, Hurricane Ioke, Typhoon Wayne (1986), just to name a few.

I was going to say Wilma and Zeta as well. Another one was Hurricane Ethel but I highly, highly doubt the facts are on its side.

i think georges .. was the most unbelievable ... it some how stayed a hurricane .. while going over every high elevated carrib island .. which if you look in history.. nearly every system that has contact with Hispaniola is weakened or completely tore apart... .

I read in the Georges report that the reason Georges maintained hurricane status over Hispaniola and Cuba was because Georges maintained a healthy upper-level outflow pattern. However, the mountainous terrain disrupted Georges's inner core and Georges was never able to completely recover from it. That is why Georges never strengthened into an intense hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico despite favorable conditions.
An interesting note about Georges: At or near peak intensity, eyewall samples showed that Georges's surface winds were the same or even greater than the flight level winds at 10,000 ft.

Andrew (1992) after it almost dissipated northeast of Puerto Rico - only to be near Category 5 strength 96 hours later...

If Georges had tracked just a little further north as to avoid the islands, South Florida and the Keys especially would have been down for the count.
