Who would you nominate for NHC Director?
With Bill leaving and Ed replacing him, and with lots of opinions that Ed will leave after this year due to the travel requirements of the position, who do you think would make a good National Hurricane Center Director? Who out there has the background, public relation skills, management style and skills, and political experience to lead and direct this diverse group of scientists?

Re: Who would you nominate for NHC Director?
I don't know if there's any senior person left in-house or at the HRD (anyone that I knew, anyway) who would be in that category - the person might need to come from the outside once again...
But - this time those who are involved in the hiring process need to be sure of this person's attitude (whether it be man or woman) towards the staff...
As you said - it needs to be a person who has multiple qualities - not an easy task to find someone like that, but, is possible at least in a reasonable sense that no one is perfect all of the time...

Lixon Avila.I pick him because he knows spanish and the Atlantic Basin has a lot of countries that need a NHC director that understands them and explains to them in a clear way and in the language they understand the best.

Frank Marks, Rick Knabb, or Chris Landsea. Frank Marks would have the advantage from a management POV since he has been director of HRD for several years

I thought of "the other Frank", but, I don't know if he would be willing to subject himself to that much travel.
I know it was difficult on Bob Sheets and Max Mayfield - both of whom enjoy being at home more than in a hotel...

Re: Who would you nominate for NHC Director?
I'd say Bill Read, MIC of the Houston/Galveston NWS office. He was high up on the short list of candidates to replace Max Mayfeild before Proenza was selected. I think Chris Landsea has a lot better things to do than be director. Bill Read would be a good choice. I spoke with him a few weeks ago about the possibility of the job opening up again. Good public spokesman.

Stewart would be the best choice, although he was called up to active duty in the Navy and sent to Iraq, and won't be back until late July 2008.

If we can't get Max back, I say Stewart. Someone in the "gummint" has to have some pull to bring him back. I think we're going to need him in a couple of weeks...

Re: Who would you nominate for NHC Director?
Who knows? I doubt we'll ever see that report completed by Proenza's superiors which would have detailed his supposed errors. I wonder if there might be a total reorganization of NOAA and the NHC. Perhaps a different relationship between the agencies and a different context within the Commerce Dept. or perhaps even a new dept. of govt. Something which would make even more clear the fact that the director is not to speak too independently before clearing everything with bureaucrats in DC. The position actually seems ideal for a retired admiral or something. The job seems less to do with the weather and more about functioning within a bureauocracy and public relations.

He still has the same buzz cut he did 3 decades ago at NHC, and doesn't look like he has aged a bit.
And KHOU-TV Channel 11 seems to be the lowest budgeted TV station for weather stuff. While the local NBC and ABC affiliates, even Fox, battle it out with newer, more super and dazzling doppler radars at the stations, and fancy graphics that don't really show anything, (like "4-D radar-satellite that "takes you under the cloud to see the rain"), Dr. Frank gets by showing the local NWS 88D NexRad, and suing early 1980s style animations of his forecasts.
He'd probably love to have a big budget again.

Re: Who would you nominate for NHC Director?
Neil Frank is ready to retire. KHOU has been looking for a replacement for a while. He wants to spend more time with his kids/grandkids not travel all around the country/world fighting NOAA for funding and fending off media attacks. He's been there and I think he'd say "no thanks".
