Who would you nominate for NHC Director?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I don't think some of you understand yet, that things may not ever be the same again at the NHC. Its not like you can just go on and forget about Proenza and what happened to him by picking a new man. Nothing will ever be the same (I think). I posted earlier that I think a total reorganization of NOAA and the NHC in relationship to each other and to the Commerce Dept(but that could change, it might be taken out of the Commerce Dept) may be in the offing. The office has become very sensitive, politically, I mean. Proenza didn't start that process, he was actually destroyed by it. Now I think the Weather Offices will be placed under more secure confines, where everyone knows their place. Like I said, you don't really need a weatherman to run this agency anymore. A retired admiral could be in the offing for the job next season, placed within a new govt bureauocracy.

You are right Chris. The only reason he is still there is because KHOU gave him hefty new contract late last year. I would guess that contract may even have a time frame in it for his exit at his desired time. Don't know the last part as a fact though.

Interesting you suggest Bill Read. I had no idea he was even on the short list.

Michael Brown, now that he's done with FEMA, he has the time to put in that's needed for NHC director. :flag:

I don't think the director should really be a top-notch forecaster.

Someone whose forecasting skills are that great should not be wasted running the agency. The director needs to be a great administrator, who has extensive experience in bureaucratic wrangling, budgeting and personnel, with enough previous knowledge of the organization to be able to understand how it works. S/he should also be someone who seems trustworthy to the public and will be good at creating a strong public image.

Well, he speaks his mind, but he is already semi-retired, and has a speech impediment.

Retired military--either Navy or Air Force. Perhaps within a new organizational structure. Not a degreed meteorologist.

I'm not a met, but am a working scientist (PhD physics). The worst, most obnoxious bosses that I've have were retired military.

Seriously though, I have to agree deltadog03. I think Lyons would be great for that job.
