i think georges .. was the most unbelievable ... it some how stayed a hurricane .. while going over every high elevated carrib island .. which if you look in history.. nearly every system that has contact with Hispaniola is weakened or completely tore apart... .

Georges came very close to hitting New Orleans and at the last minute turned away. It was suppose to stall out over New Orleans even. Think about how bad that would be. New Orleans had close calls prior to Katrina with Isidore and Ivan.

If Georges had tracked just a little further north as to avoid the islands, South Florida and the Keys especially would have been down for the count.

True. However, Puerto Rico was hit hard by Georges. Georges traveled westward across the entire island as a Category 3 hurricane. In fact, the reason Georges was classified as a Category 3 was because of the Civil Defense office in Fajardo measured a sustained wind of 96KT and gusts to 113KT.

I think the entire island felt the full force of Georges.

Georges would have still interacted with land although with the eye offshore, so it probably still would have weakened some (or at least fluctuated) - but easily could have been a Category 3 at that point.
