Re: NHC Director Bill Proenza re-assig,Ed Rappaport new director
My analogy to utility companies was for litigation purposes. People can't sue the utility because of a power loss unless they can directly show the utility was grossly negligent. I am NOT in favor of ever privatizing severe weather warnings. The most fundamental responsibility of government is the protection of its own citizens and in my mind they cannot delegate that out.

I still am wondering what Bill did wrong? How is he endangering the public? If anything, he provided constructive criticism to improve the facilities and technology used for hurricane forecasting.
What I believe really ENDANGERS the public is when the NHC director is submissive to the bureacrats above him who care more about money, expenses, and power than they do of the quality of their forecasts and the technology they use.
This is becoming like Soviet Russia...criticize those with more power and you will lose your position. Come on people...Bill exercised his First Ammendment. We should support him...not bureacracy!

The US government seems to believe that the 1st Amendment says "you have the right to express what we think is right to express." I don't see how he endangered anyone. He brought out to light some of the internal problems the agency has so they can be fixed. The government is the one that is endangering people by not providing enough funds to have a better forecast system. But I assure you that the spy satellites are up to the second, not up to date, but up to second. Everything is blah, blah, and blah, and nothing is resolved. In politics is always the same story, may it be the year 345 AD or 2007 AD.

can we leave the political crap out of this
Please do not make this purely political, especially when one does not have all of the facts.

Is not crap because everything we are saying is true. You know very well that the annual funds for the NHC have been cut very year. The equipment they are using is becoming outdated and needs to be replaced. Furthermore, since the government is involved in all of these, then how can you not include politics?

Bill Proenza seems to feel that way too, unfortunately.

No, you misinterpreted what I said. Read the title of this thread. It concerns the firing of Bill Proenza...no mention about the policies or workings of the hurricane center. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this whole matter and figure out why he was fired...
[EDITED FOR RULES VIOLATION]
...I am tired of walking in the dark...I would like to know more about this matter then the vague details being sold by the mainstream media.
ananlogy: Joe Torre, Manager of the New York Yankees, complains about about Steinbrenner's insistance on recruiting more hitters than reliable pitchers. As a result, Torre goes bye bye.
Heck, if I wanted to know about how the national hurricance center works, I could just look it up on Wikipedia.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but man oh man do I miss Max in his official position.
He was always so professional, polite, pleasant, and a good friend (yes I know him) to boot. This whole affair has given the NHC a black eye.

I always chuckle when someone tries to cry free-speech and 1st Ammendment when it applies to a work/business situation. Let's try the real world for a change folks. You always have the right to free speech but that doesn't mean that it's without consequences. When you go to the media with criticism about your boss in your official capacity, you're just asking to get fired. I don't care if you work for the NOAA or Joe's Sub and Snacks.

Free speech means you have the right to say it it doesn't mean you can't be held responsible for it. No one is throwing anyone in jail for opening their mouth but you assume the responsibility for your own actions. Plain and simple you have two issues; one a boss that disagreed with his bosses and went public saying it and, second, employees that did the same thing against the same boss. If you believe the testimony Franklin and company voiced their concerns to the investigating team but then couldn't wait a few days for their findings to be delivered. Proenza was a loose cannon his whole career so he was either set up to fail (very possible) since he didn't even apply originally for the position or, he was sent down there to break up the clique and it backfired. In any business be it government or private sector this is now a human resources manager worst nightmare.

Bill Proenza did not know how to communicate with other people at NHC. He didn't seem to have a good relationship with NHC staff. I am sure he's a good meterologist.

So you're talking about all of them? That applies to Bill Proenza, the 4 NHC forecasters, and the NHC staff that complained about him.
