I'm not quite sure why you are having an allergic reaction to this. They aren't meant to be mean, but rather to open young people's eyes to the fact that the world isn't always a nice place and moreover, to help these young people prepare for the various things that life will throw at them. And it certainly isn't a joke. Perhaps it's a little light in presentation, but it isn't silly in terms of content.

Not all of us can feel comfortable in the real world and it isn't because we don't want to... it is because it is our makeup that we aren't able to do things we would like to do or are able to do.
