Forum for active storms
We haved created this new forum for active systems in all the basins from TD's to hurricanes or typhoon's.Once the last advisory is issued for a system it will be moved to the archieves forum for the members to look at past storms.
The forum will work like this:
We'll continue the seperate threads in this forum like we did last year however we'll only start a new thread when the storm changes intensity. Since there will be far fewer threads in this forum we'll let the discussion run (regardless of pages) until the storm changes in intensity; TD to TS, TS to Hurricane, and Hurricane to Major. At that point a new thread will be started with the title reflecting the new status and the current one locked. 48 hours after the last advisory is written the threads will be combined and moved into the archives.
What do the members think of this new forum?

I was this way before, but now I like it because of the new active storms forum.

Great idea, I love what you guys are doing with the tropics forums.

As it does make things more organized, it just made things a heck of a lot more "confusing". I really don't know about this. Searching will be improved though for the years section but there are downsides. It's hard to gauge these downsides compared to the upsides.

We'll issue new threads; to "purge" the old information and keep the fresh. That way, users don't have to wade through a bunch of pages of information about what used to be a tropical depression... etc. It can be confusing to someone to see a thread on an active storm say "Hurricane Zulu" to see the first dozen pages be nothing but invest/tropical depression stages.
Now... with that said, once the storm is finished, we'll merge all the threads together into one and place it into the archive section.

I would prefer to eliminate this forum and have everything just under Talkin Tropics but that's just my opinion.
I'd like to add my voice, too.
I've not really liked this forum because every time the WPac throws up a storm the subforum description isn't edited to include the WPac. And this goes back to the whole 'neglecting' thing from a while back.

There's a performance issue to this as well, though. Opening Talkin Tropics uses a lot more board resources than opening this forum, because there are nearly 35000 topics there as opposed to 13 in this forum just now.
With hundreds of people trying to access the forum at once, that can make the difference between good performance and bringing the board to its knees.
Give it a chance. I think everyone will get used to it soon enough.

I like the format.
Dare I say it might be even better if some of the chatters get post banned from just this forum if they make meaningless off topic remarks, one liners, or use a page of punctuation.

Hey, wait a minute! If we move INVESTS to the active storms thread, whats the point of even having an Active Storms thread?
From the TD 4 thread ...
I think this is a good idea. An Invest means a storm is forming or is likely to form and gets it moved into the active forums. The talkin tropics forum is then used for areas of investigation or other discussion.
I like it.

And the explanation from that thread...

Every time you load this forum it will load 10-20 threads. Every time you pull up the main forum it will load 35,000 plus threads. The lightened load on the server will help us to stay up during busy times.
The main forum will still be for general tropical discussion, blob watches, and all that stuff.

Re: Forum for active storms
A suggestion. If you want to limit the number of threads in this forum, (which I think is a good idea) can we make it so that only mods can post new topics here? That way the topics per active storm (or invest) can stay limited and focused, e.g.
-- a model thread
-- a recon thread
-- a general discussion thread
Perhaps this is already the policy... with things having been quiet for the early part of the season, some of are just now getting up to speed on the changes.

Re: Forum for active storms
Of course there would also be advisory threads for each active system. My suggestion of approved topics per system above is not meant to be exhaustive, just a few ideas/examples.
And perhaps a thread for folks to post links to their latest forecasts, (though these could also go in the main discussion thread for each active system)
It bothers me to see so many "link to my personal forecast" topics as their own unique thread. Clutters up the board. I'd rather see them all in one place.

That format is much better for the forums! It makes it easier to find the relevant information without jumping between forums. Additionally, it allows people to explore interesting information (in the large Talkin' Tropics forum) that would pass unnoticed: historical storms, interesting questions, "teaching tools", and non-INVEST areas can be discussed. This format has solved all of my initial complaints! Thanks!
