High temperatures blanketed the Mid-South once again Tuesday, leaving two more deaths in their wake.

The heat-related deaths reported Tuesday in the Memphis area brought the total number of heat-related deaths in Tennessee during the present heat wave to five.

Officials said the body of a 75-year-old man was found Monday inside his Memphis home, which didn't have air conditioning. Also Monday, the body of a 77-year-old woman was found in the backyard of her Hickory Hill home, where she had been gardening.

Shelby County Medical Examiner Karen Chancellor said the number of deaths from the current heat wave is being considered unusual. Chancellor said the Memphis area had two heat deaths last year. The area has now had five deaths in a six-day period.

Other heat-related deaths investigated by the Shelby County Regional Forensic Center include the death of a 70-year-old woman found on Saturday, a 46-year-old woman found on Friday and a 54-year-old woman found August 7th.

At the National Weather Service's headquarters at the Agricenter on Tuesday, there were reminders that the extreme head impacts not only health, but local industry, like farming.

"It will definitely affect them money-wise," said Becky Muller of the Shelby County Agricultural Extension Service, "because if they lose their crop, or there's not enough to harvest, it definitely means dollars."

The National Weather Service's Crissy Scotten urged the public to keep a historical perspective.

"It will probably be one of those heat waves that years down the road people will say, 'Man, that Summer of 2007. But also, remember 2000 was much worse. 1980 was much worse,'" she said.

1980 and 2000 were the last two years with more than ten consecutive days with temperatures measured at 100 degrees or high. The current heat wave in the Mid-South has currently recorded five consecutive days of 100 degree temperatures.

Fortunately, the toll was not higher ... the MId-South and Southeast heat wave has been downright incredible, and also historic in many places ... KGSP set an all time record with 105º, and many locations are averaging close to 100º for their high temperatures up to this point in the month ...

The toll in Memphis rose to 12 today.

But I agree Stormsfury, this heat wave, although not as intense as 1980 has also produced a MUCH lower death toll than 27 years ago, which is very fortunate. I don't think we broke 100 today. The hottest I saw it was 98, with a HI around 103 so still pretty hot. The forecast puts us at or above the century mark in the coming days.

Although, I may be wrong about not breaking the century mark. Apparently Memphis tied a record of 101 today..

After a slight reprieve, if you want to call highs around 96-97 for a couple of days that, it looks like we're going to be in another 3-4 day stretch of triple digit heat, coupled with heat index values.

A 13th heat death was also confirmed in Memphis today as temperatures hovered near 100.
