A little correction to what was just said: 2005 actually had more ACE.
2005 = 248 (248.059)
2004 = 225
2005 had the most ACE of any season; Zeta helped us beat 1950. (has anyone ever found it coincidental that 1950, which was the first year storms began being named, had the most major hurricanes and the second-highest ACE?)

I have a question for Mike:
The Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential is higher in the gulf and caribbean than in 2005 because of the lack of activity. SST's are about the same as 2005 in these areas. How important is Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential to hurricane intensification? Could we see a storm as strong as Katrina with the SST's and TCHP we have now, assuming an ideal environment?
