The Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential is higher in the gulf and caribbean than in 2005 because of the lack of activity. SST's are about the same as 2005 in these areas. How important is Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential to hurricane intensification? Could we see a storm as strong as Katrina with the SST's and TCHP we have now, assuming an ideal environment?

Mike, how much effect do you think the current heat wave over the southeast could have on gulf SSTs? I would imagine it would take quite a few weeks to have an appreciable effect on SSTs but I've seen some folks suggesting that it might have a bigger impact.
