CIMSS African WV Loop

#1 Postby Frank2 » Fri Aug 10, 2007 7:25 am

This loop gives a good indication of what's been going on over the past 10 days:

P.S. It was interesting to hear what one well-known TWC OCM said last night, concerning those "what's going to happen a month from now" hurricane season forecasts - to my surprise, he asked why folks even bother, since these forecasts only get sensationalized. I was glad to hear that someone else feels this way - the very same feeling was expressed by our old NHC and HRD DIrectors, and, was one reason why they always avoided getting caught up in such "crystal ball" activities, since, though scientists, they accepted the fact that no one (on Earth) really knows for sure...

I guess those mets weren't the same ones that started 3 and 5 day hurricane forecasts then. Even today, nobody (on Earth) knows for sure where these canes are going to go.

Well, at least one Director I worked for told me that he wasn't going to submit himself to chasing shadows by giving a seasonal forecast - I couldn't agree more...

Again, I was surprised at what the TWC OCM said last night - I mean it when I say good for him...

I'm not being critical when I say this, folks, but, take it from someone who's been there - don't let the fear drive your imagination when it comes to what might happen...

Here's an even better loop, courtesy EUMETSAT (new image every 15 minutes):

as my co-workers often say, "At least Frank is good for finding things on the Internet!"

Too true...

Perhaps we were better off back when seasonal forecasts were not issued. In those days, we gave less attention to numbers and more attention to the possibility of a devastating strike from any storm that might have come our way. Here in South Florida, hurricanes were a given and we respected the damage they can do.

I agree - as for the person who helped to make long-term totals a common practice, Dr. Gray is a fine person, but, I can recall some considered him a rogue scientist when he first began releasing yearly forecasts about 25 years ago...

Personally, from the start, I never felt it a good thing, since, it's as if a human is trying to tell God how things will turn out - not good...
