Can anyone identify the storm featured in this pic accompanying the AP story on Flossie?

What the? Why just not use a photo of Flossie? I think that is Fabian but not sure.

Also, I did not know this:

The islands get an average of 4.5 tropical cyclones a year and one hurricane about every 15 years.

The article says that on its "fast fact" or something like that. I did not know that the Hawaiin Islands get that many storms per year. Wow.

I don't think that is accurate. 4.5 storms per year? I highly doubt that since it seems like a rare event anytime one gets close or hits.

Rarely does a storm directly hit the Hawaiian Islands. They just kick up the big waves that surfers there love

Yes, it's a basin average of 4.5 a year not the islands.

It will be the 15th anniversary of Iniki next month.

Oh, and it's Fabian. Why did I look this up? :ggreen:

I think by impacted, they mean has been affected by 4.5TC's, not made landfall. It wouldnt surprise me if Hawaii had some increased surf, or rainbands from a TC or had a remnant TC pass over or near the islands, 4 to 5 times a year.

This might be another way of viewing that rather ambiguous sentence. I still doubt it however - last season we had five CPac TCs, and only two (Daniel as a remnant and TD 4C as a remnant) affected the islands.
