It's a joke, right? Not an invest!

#1 Postby bvigal » Sat Aug 11, 2007 10:07 pm

NRL - not operational 24hrs.
FNMOS - a joke: wait 3 minutes, then get a 4-hr-old picture
SSD - all 4 Atlantic floaters "not active"
RAMSDIS - 2 floaters, both on Caribbean

3-hrly updates for looping? IMPOSSIBLE!

Has everyone just taken the weekend off? Are we just wasting our time until Monday morning, stuck with still shots??? I'm sorry, but I'm at 60W, and I want to see loops. Why are 4 sites all down at the same time, when an invest is on the table????

Yes, I understand about SSD... but their East Atlantic, which should refresh every 3 hrs + about 25 minutes - at August 12- 0300z, showing picture from 17:45z. Even at 3hr intervals, that's OLD!

Are they? I thought they were every 3... my bad. But I'm spoiled with invests on NRL which are usually, even from umetsat, every 30 min.

One thing is for sure, there's no way to see rotation on loop with 6-hr intervals!

Who knows. Maybe the Navy forgot to pay the internet bill.

NRL is "experimental" and has a disclaimer that they don't guarantee to be timely, etc. I wrote to a contact there, but not working today. Can't blame them, they deserve time off. But supposed to have 3-hrly updates, that is the EUMETSAT agreement with their customers. (More frequent pics are supplied, but customers are forbidden to publish them.) SSD, GHCC, CIRA, NAVY should all be able to share 3-hrly shots, not 6hrly. At least that's what they have said over the years. I've written to ALL of them, and NWS, and EUMETSAT, who sent me a copy of the "agreement". The bottom line is, the satellite pics are taken at least every 30 minutes, we (public) just aren't allowed to see but once per 3 hrs via other sources, as it would have a negative impact on the revenue stream to EUMETSAT. I could dig up and post the old emails, if anyone doesn't believe me. I know their own site is more frequent, but they don't have lat/lons, and cape verde region is frequently across two "zones".

Like NRL:

Most NOAA imagery updates every half hour like cycloneye says.

Other EUMETSAT Meteosat Images:

MET-9 - Full Disc - Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimate (MPE) - Updates every 15 minutes

MET-9 - Full Disc - Airmass - RGB - Updates every hour

MET-9 - Full Disc - IR10.8 - Color - Updates every 3 hours

Luis, you are RIGHT! (and THANKS!) I just got home from a party, and almost everyone there has boat or business, or both, and wanted to know 'what's happening?' I thought when I got home I'd be able to see the usual (at least) 3-hrly shots.

Chris, I did check FNMOC, and the shot is 2345z, almost 4 hrs old. Yes, maybe it will update in 30 minutes (at 0315z) with 0245z shot, but naval sites usually display 30 minutes on INVESTS, just like the SAL pics, even at African coast.

EUMETSAT does update every 30min or less, but shots have no lat/lon or reference, and the area in question is frequently split between "zones".

Guess it's time for bed, and in the morning, GOES12 will have it.

Right now, at 0343z, the SSD "East Atlantic" view is 2000UTC, or 4pm EDT. That is almost 8 hours old!

That's one of the best wittiest posts I have ever seen on this site! Thanks for the great dose of humor. Hopefully, the NRL sites will be restored.
