7-Year-Old Fetus Skeleton Removed From Woman's Womb

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Indonesian doctors have removed the skeleton of a fetus that had been stuck in its mother's womb for more than seven years.
The mother said she knew she was pregnant in late 1995. But when she failed to deliver a child, she didn't go back to the hospital because she was worried about expensive medical bills.
A naval spokesman said the woman went to doctors complaining of stomach pains. Naval surgeons initially thought she had a tumor, but when they operated on her, they discovered the skeleton of a fetus in her womb.
The operation was performed aboard a warship as part of a medical and social work program.
Indonesia has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Asia. Emergency medical care is poor, and in some areas, nonexistent.
