This is just a notice for everyone that the staff has decided to put Invests in the Active forum.
The active forum has proven to be a major benefit to the server since you don't have to pull up the 35,000-thread Talkin Tropics forum every time you reload to check for new posts.
We've moved the Invests there simply for the benefit of members so that you don't have to jump back and forth between the two forums to look at the threads. It will also further lessen the load on the server.
A major surge of members has begun and we expect it to only grow in the coming days, so we're trying to do everything we can to assure we stay online and bring our members the latest information.

Re: Invests now in Active Storms Forum

It's an interesting dilemma. Today it makes sense to have 91L up in the "active" thread, since that way we can all watch TD4 and 91L together, and server load is an issue. But at other times when it is less active, having to go up to the separate "Active" forum to discuss an invest could be a nuisance.
There's no way all folks are going to be pleased either way the decision goes. Pretty much a toss up, I think.

This is being done for server performance everyone. To explain a bit: Everytime someone enters the Talkin Tropics forum the server has to load EVERY thread in that forum each and everytime. This puts a HUGE HUGE strain on the server and cause a big slowdown or an outage all together. Putting the "Active" threads in the Active storm forum eliminates this. You do want the forum to be "up" at all times don't you?

How about moving all the very old topics to separate archives? Instead of loading ~34400 topics, if you archive everything older than Jan 01 2007, you get ~1050 topics.

I must ask that we please use a naming convention in the Active Storms forum. For example, now we have the following two threads for TD4:
Global Models for TD4=00z GFS run is being posted
Tropical Depression 4,Discussions,Analysis, and Pics
I propose changing these two threads, for example, to:
Tropical Depression 4 - Discussion, Analysis, Imagery
Tropical Depression 4 - Global Models (00z GFS is being posted)
As it is, it's hard to tell which threads belong to what storm. Naming conventions really do work.

I agree. There needs to be some order to the thread names. It makes it easier IMO.

This is what is done in most forums, and I would endorse it as both logical and practical.
