Heart Breaking Story!

#1 Postby mamadude » Mon Jun 23, 2003 6:24 pm

(AP) - A state trooper who was on active duty with the Virginia National Guard was killed in a four-car accident on the Eastern Shore, police said.

Anthony Darryl Campbell, 35, of Exmore, died shortly after the Friday night crash. His 8-year-old son Andrew was seriously injured and airlifted to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk with a severe head injury.

Andrew died from his injury Monday, on what would have been his ninth birthday.

Campbell's wife, Leigh, was not seriously injured. State Police Sgt. D.S. Carr said she was being treated at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Carr said the accident was caused by 55-year-old Larrie Linwood Taylor, who was driving drunk and hit the car in front of him, starting a chain reaction. The accident occurred around 10 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 13 and Business Route 13 in the town of Onley.

The Campbells were on their way to buy the latest "Harry Potter" novel, which went on sale at midnight.

Carr said the Campbells were wearing their seat belts.

Campbell was detached from the Virginia State Police while he was serving with the National Guard. He was on leave from Fort A.P. Hill visiting family on the Eastern Shore.

There were no other serious injuries, Carr said.

Taylor, of Painter, was charged with manslaughter and driving while under the influence. He was treated at the hospital and arrested upon release. He was later released on bond.

The driver whom started this horrible wreck was drunk...and he survived...how does that NOT surprise me! The drunk driver walks away unharmed...and everyone else becomes deceased. What a horrible theme.

It's so sad that people have such a disregard for human life that they would drive under the influence. Next time someone in your life attempts to get behind the wheel under influence, TAKE THEIR KEYS! You may be saving their life as well as others.

This horrifies me... angers me.... UGHHH! I hate drivers that drive drunk and cause an accident and kill somebody else, but they live. How is THAT fair? Very sad... Thoughts and prayers are with the wife/mom.
