Have their been wind reports out of the NE quad. The eyewall on that side looks devastating...

I'll go ahead and report for you. No more Chetumal.

165 kt FL winds....using the .92 reduction would suggest near 175 mph surface winds....using .9 reduction indicates 172 mph surface winds.
Evidence suggests Dean is at least a solid 170.
OMG! And THIS is the 1ST Hurricane of the Season?!?!?!
Remember in 05 when every Cat 5 beat the one before hand, hopefully that does NOT occur this year.

And I'll take this guaranteed accurate data over Camille's sketchy data anytime. We have verifiable winds with Dean. Perhaps the strongest Atlantic landfalling hurricane of all time? Top 3 no doubt.

Re:
Scorpion wrote:With the forward speed about the same as Andrew's, this could deepen through landfall and bring very strong winds well inland, perhaps strong Cat 4 winds to Chetumal
Chetumal wont recieve Category 4 conditions in the southern eyewall unless Dean's southern eyewall has strengthened since last recon obs...Recon obs suggested that Dean carried solid 125 mph winds in his southern eyewall. Land friction should reduce these winds to at least 110 mph or so. This is, of course, going on data an hour ago. It is quite possible Dean's southern eyewall has intensified much like its northern eyewall.
Forward speed relationships now suggest that Dean's southern eyewall contains 130 mph winds (20 mph forward speed, 170 N Quad 130 S Quad).

Of course, Dean will give a big boost to this year's ACE index.

It must be quite an experience to have the equivilent of an F3 tornado 20 miles wide carrying 20 feet of water inside of it in your neck of the woods...

This is a very good picture of him after the eclipse

It just doesn't seem right. Something this evil and unforgiven to be a male name...

Scorpion wrote:Even if Chetumal "only" gets Cat 3 winds the results will be devastating. Cat 3 winds are absolutely nothing to sneeze at, the majority of major landfalls do not bring Cat 3 conditions past a mile or two inland
Im more worried about the intense gusts this might produce. Chetumal could endure 170 mph gusts which are the highest gusts measured in hurricane charley.

Land friction is minimal because the area between landfall and Chetumal is warm wetlands type mangroves etc.

I disagree.
If this storm werent bombing, then it would be in weakening mode right now. The only reason it isn't collapsing is because it is bombing.

What doesn't seem right to me is that the only news station right now that is covering this is the Weather Channel.
This is history. This is bad. This is a very big story. Yet FoxNews, MSNBC, et. al. think it's not even worth a mention.
I guarantee if it was just a category one hitting the gulf coast we'd hear about it non stop on all the news channels. Yet, it seems like when it wasn't going to hit America most people stopped caring.
