Re: Major Hurricane DEAN: 8 AM p319: Cat 5 landfall at 3:30, dis
Seeing how the eye crossed the coast at Costa Maya, and there is a port there for cruise ships, one would think that there would be some kinda weather recording station there.
It is quite a complex with a dock that will moor two cruise ships and a big shopping mall right on the water. There are also some large, renforced concrete buildings there

I would think the ship captains and the cruse ship company would have a weather station at that point to given them info on wind speeds when they dock etc.
Doubtful if an anometer could endure the cat 5 winds, but a barometer chart would be really interesting to read.
Does anyone know if there was a weather station there?

165 mph, 906 mb. But we will have to wait for the Post-season report to get the most accurate information.

Boy, I sure hope there was no one there in that resort. What a shame! It was beautiful, I'm sure its not so beautiful anymore. The one positive is that this thing didn't hit some heavily populated areas, like further north. The way Dean was still strengthening and moving so quickly you've gotta know that the winds at the eye and to the north for 10 or 20 miles or so were absolutely helacious!

Re: Hurricane DEAN: Global Models
Yum Yum... I'm eating lots and lots of crow this morning. But in all seriousness I am so very glad for US interests that the ridge never failed the southern track GFS predicted. I thought up until Sunday that I saw something that was going to allow the ridge to move more eastward, but obviously this did not pan out and I am very glad that it did not. However, I feel deeply for those in Mexico that were hit by such a devastating blow this morning. Our thoughts are with you...

Just goes to show that I know absolutely nothin about the tropics. I was convinced that the ULL would allow a more northerly track.

We stopped in Costa Maya last year on a cruise and took a tour inland to see a Mayan village. From talking with the tour guide, our impression was that the village around the cruise docks at Costa Maya was pretty transient, with a lot of locals who stayed there to drive buses or do guide work, but had permanent residences elsewhere, further inland.
When asked why the Mayans had abandoned the area, the guide stated that one theory was there was a series of major hurricanes that hit the region during the latter years of the Mayan period.

I was just watching TWC and they have Jim Cantore in Puerto Aventuras at a hotel. I have a time share at this hotel. The hotel name is Aventura Spa Palace. It is amazing to see the waves crashing against the hotel. Just looking at the t.v. it looks like they are about 16 to 18 feet tall judging by where they are hitting. If you want to get an idea of how high they are you could watch TWC and also look at the hotels web site. Go to http://www.palaceresorts.com and click on resorts then Aventura Spa Palace. There are plenty of property photos. This will help show how high those waves are.

Looking at the infrared satellite with Dean it seems that when this does reemerge over the Bay of Campeche there will still be some interaction with land. The satellite is suggesting a due west motion since landfall and the eye still appears to be south of 19 N.
This could have big implications for the potential strength of Dean in the Gulf. I realistically don't see this reintensifying back to a 3 on the other side of Mexico. The Bay of Campeche at 19 or even 19.5 N is nowhere near as wide as it is at 20 N and north of that. Less time over water = less time for restrengthening.

am not in Belize but have just spoken to several people on the island.
wind is starting to calm down, think they will be able to get out in an hour or so. in town and south island not as bad as Keith, water didnt come up as high and wind gusts werent as strong. several or most of the piers on the front have gone. some damaged houses but other wooden houses still ok. the trees still have leaves although quite a few down.

I enjoyed this wobble article over at the weather channel:

The NHC forecast was incredibly accurate, hats off to the NHC staff who keep doing a better and better job forecasting hurricanes.
